Anyone watching what happened in Oregon and their new gun laws?

    Curious what you think?

I live in Oregon. I heard the bill had stalled for a bit, and that's the last I've heard so far.

Do you mean as far as stalling? Or with the gun bill itself?
The new law was supposed to require anyone purchasing a gun to take a gun safety course and get a permit. I'm not sure why it was stalling.

The Canadian side of me says take the course... I can own handguns in Canada and the course I took taught me a lot. I also have a carry permit in Florida ... the course I took was nothing like the one I took in Canada. Now I could always buy a gun in Florida I just couldn't carry.

BTW, I think Florida is a constitutional carry state now and don't need a permit to carry.

On why the bill is stalling... it might be unconstitutional to make someone take a course before buying a gun. Recent decisions by the Supreme, as recent as the sumer of 2022 made it hard for states to make it sooo restrictive to get a gun or carry a gun... New York has to change their laws from May give a permit TO Shall give a permit.

    I love the constitution...

Taking a course definitely wouldn't hurt. A lot of times lately, though, I hear people talk about the fact that gun laws are intended to prevent criminals from getting guns, but they'll probably find a way to acquire guns illegally anyway, so people worry about these laws actually just making it harder for law-abiding citizens to get guns to defend themselves.

That might be a big part of it.

As do I. I am amazed at the number of people who apparently do not.

Mandatory minimums is all you need... not all but close... X amount of years if you are caught with an illegal gun.... XX amount of years if you use a gun during a crime...XXX amount of years if someone is hurt while committing a crime while XXXX or death if you use an illegal gun during a crime and someone dies.... That'll fix a lot... Keeping up with the times, 2023, all of this is moot if you're trans-gender stripping at an elementary school...

I agree, but the problem is that the same people who think the problem is
the gun, and not the person pulling the trigger, are also the same people
who do NOT want to enforce these laws or, if they do, they don't want them applied uniformly. They would not want to make an example of your trans-gendered stripper, for example.
