  • wcRADIUS and Linksys Router

    Has anyone gotten this combination to work? In the past I've used radius
    for my dial-up modem pool with both in house hardware and wholesale
    national providers. Fired up my old server for the first time in maybe 12
    years thinking I would try the radius feature on my wireless access point
    and use it to control authentication for the kids tablets. So far I'm
    seeing errors that it isn't receiving the password on the wcRADIUS screen. Anyone have any thoughts? Does anyone still use radius?

    Hi Brian,

    Geez, this stuff always just worked and the support needs were always
    low. We don't get any feedback on this much more, so whether they are
    using it or not, its good to see there is still "interest." We need
    to find out what to do with it.

    Authentication for the kids tablets? Interesting. Asking in the
    winserver support mailing list may come back with something.

    Although RADIUS is a complex protocol, with wcRADIUS, it is too easy
    to setup. :)

    First, of course, the first step is to get client (the RADIUS setup on tablets) secret passwords match is set.

    Is this the password? The client (device) or is it beyond that with an
    wcUSER (wildcat user) authentication?

    Set a higher verbose debug to see if there is anything there.

    Other than that, off the top of my head, make sure that the router
    RADIUS setup supports one of the basic authentication methods. I don't
    recall the typical client options generally offered but I recall its
    plain vs (MS) CHAP.

    Let me know how that works out. I am very interested to see how
    WINSERVER with its RADIUS support among other standard IETF protocols
    can benefit with this new smart device everywhere world. :)

    Does anyone still use radius?

    If you have a Site Survey feature on your WL gear or use INSIDDER http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ on a PC/Laptop you will likely
    note that most neighboring businesses and home users use WPA/WPA2.

    Has anyone gotten this combination to work?

    I have wcRadius functioning on my Cisco gear and current TP-Link WL Routers
    and APÿs.

    The most common issues with RADIUS setups are:

    - Mismatch between Secrets
    - No IP route from client to Radius Server
    - Firewall blocking ports
    - Client requires Server to offer VEA support

    With Cisco gear you may need to consider

    - The authentication fallback order
    - LEAP related configuration if applicable

    Finally one of the reasons why platforms such DD-WRT are so popular is
    because Vendor provided firmware images sometimes have issues and/or limitations with older technologies.

    It maybe necessary to fire up Wireshark or a similar PA to sniff out the issue.
