A fast-moving winter system swept across Washington and Oregon on
November 23, 2021, leaving a white wash in its wake. The Moderate
Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra
satellite acquired a true-color image of the aftermath of the storm on
November 24. The image is centered on eastern Oregon and includes the
Strawberry Mountain Wilderness.
Local media reported that a substantial layer of snow and ice caused
spinouts and crashes across many mountainous roadways. On of the worst
was 1-90 Snoqualmie Pass, which was closed five miles west of the
summit near Denny Creek on November 23. Westbound remained open,
although with restrictions that included chains on any vehicle over
10,000 GVW. ORE204 was also closed 11 miles east of the intersection
with Oregon-Washington Highway.
