On December 25, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image
centered on snow-covered Sweden (north) and Denmark (southwest) and
Germany (south).
The long Jutland Peninsula of western Denmark is connected to northern
Germany, while the eastern half of that country is comprised mostly of
smaller islands. The larger islands of Denmark are joined by some of
the longest bridges in the world—the Storstrøm, the Great Belt, and the
Øresund, which joins Denmark to Sweden. The names correspond to the
straits between the islands, with the Storstrom the western-most strait
and the Oresund the eastern-most. These straits connect the Baltic Sea
(east) with the Kattegat (west).
