Summary Author: Arturo Buenrostro; Jim Foster

The Sun has been slowly awakening from a rather prolonged period of
inactivity ( solar minimum). Shown above is a view of the Sun as
observed from my home near Dallas, Texas, on April 24, 2021 –- top
photo is a full disk view and bottom photo is a close-up. The close-up
view focuses on the sunspots and magnetic field data in regions
AR12816 and AR12818. Sunspots here are classified as Zurich
Class C -- two or more spots demonstrating bi-polarity with either
the lead spot or trailing spot having a penumbra.

    Lunar Corona over Death Valley

    August 30, 2021

    Death Valley Moon Halo copy

    Photographer: Arpan Das
Summary Authors: Arpan Das; Jim Foster

This superb lunar corona was visible in Death Valley,
California, one evening earlier this summer. The colorful rings, which
add a little verve to the drab surrounds of Death Valley, could be
observed with the naked eye. Coronas may be seen whenever mid-level
clouds, composed of minute water droplets, are in the vicinity of
the Moon or Sun. Diffraction of sunlight by the droplets results in
the colored rings. Note that the gibbous Moon was slightly
overexposed here in order to draw out the pastel colored rings.

    Archive - Jack-O'-Lantern Sun

    October 30, 2021

Every weekend we present a notable item from our archives.

This spooky EPOD was originally published October 30, 2011.

    Photographer: Phil Lachman
Summary Author: Phil Lachman; Jim Foster
A freak pattern in the clouds as sunset approached produced this smiley
Jack-O'-Lantern-like Sun as observed from a lookout over the
Parramatta Valley of western Sydney, Australia. The
reddened colors result from sunlight passing through a greater
distance of atmosphere to reach the camera at this time of day as
opposed to when the Sun is higher in the sky. In essence, the
shorter wavelength blues and greens are removed almost
completely, leaving the longer wavelength gold, red and pumpkin orange
colors to paint the sky. Make sure to protect your eyes when
looking toward the Sun. Photo taken on January 24, 2011.

    Art Imitates Nature

    December 30, 2021

    Summary Author: Rick Stankiewicz

The Island of Kauai (The Garden Island of the Hawaiian Chain) is a
wonderful destination for waterfalls, canyons, and lush vegetation.
Geologically Kauai is the second oldest of the main Hawaiian
Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1456 square km), it is the
fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and the 21st largest island
    of the United States.

One of the many waterfalls to see while visiting this paradise is
Opaekaa Falls (means “Rolling Shrimp”), which is situated on the
east side of the island. To admire the falls from a distance there is a
drive-in lookout from Route 580, on the Kuamoo Road, located just west
of Wailua. This 151 ft. (46m) high falls splits into three
cascading channels that spill down a narrow valley. The day I visited
this spot with my wife, we happened upon a local artist whom I think
you will agree, captured the scene beautifully. Photo taken on February
    1st, 2006.
