Thanks to a very wet July, the landscape of southwestern Australia has
sprung to verdant life in August 2021. Local media reports that Perth,
capital of Western Australia located on the southwestern coast,
recorded 271 millimeters (10.7 in) of rain for the month, which comes
in just shy of the highest ever recorded in the month. Streamflow has
been boosted by 80 percent in much of the region while several dams,
which marked record lows for the past two years, have filled with
precious water. The rain also has botanists predicting a bumper
wildflower season in southern Western Australia.

On August 6, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of
southwestern Australia brilliantly colored in deep green. A comparison
image, also taken by Terra, that shows the same area on February 20,
2021, before the copious rains fell, can be found HERE. The
roll-over comparison is provided by the NASA Worldview app.
