On August 25, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color dust
storm sweeping across western Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan.

Pale plumes of dust appear to rise from point sources near the Hamoun
Wetland, which sits along the border of Iran (west) and Afghanistan.
This extremely arid region hosts both sand seas and semi-dry salt lakes
and lies in the path of recurrent strong winds—characteristics that
make this region a frequent source of large dust storms. The
light-colored dust curls over the brick-red sands of the western edge
    of Afghanistan’s Registan Desert.
