• move from Hudson to JAM

From Carlos Navarro@2:341/234.1 to All on Sun Sep 12 09:14:58 2021
Is there any tool or script that moves all messages from a Hudson area to a JAM message base?

(I can do it manually with my editor, but I'd like to do it automatically.)

I'm sure most of us might recommend exactly that method. I have used it many times. It's over & done in a jiffy.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I do not know of such a tool.
When I migrated from Squish to JAM I used Golded to do the task.

I was haunted by your possible intentions, and had a double-think about what you want to do. There was a way I was moving incoming *.msg traffic to a JAM netmail area, which satified certain conditions only. I did this using
an old DOS package called NetMgr.

NetMgr is fairly simple to use. Have a look around. If you get stuck then I can provide you with an old exectable that's been patched for Y2K bugs.

BTW, I was doing the same thing with a package called RnTrack when I was
using FMail32/linux (because NetMgr/linux was broken). I was stubborn and wanted my JAM netmail area!! :)

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Thank you, I also use GoldED to move messages but I'd like to automate this.

I'll explain. My tosser (Fmail) stores dupes and bad messages in Hudson areas. I'd like to move those messages to JAM areas (or to *.MSG, or whatever), to avoid issues if the HMB grows too much.

Thank you for your suggestions. I don't know if NetMgr, RnTrack or others can be used for this, but will check...

I haven't used NetMgr for years but I think it'll do this for you.

I would avoid any move options (or better, have a backup) in case you need to go back to step one for some reason.

I know. I suffered FMail for three years. Now I play with Mystic (emphasis on 'play').

Ask Wilfred for recommendations. I had a script that did a "ftools maint -h -d -n -o -p" on demand (i.e. 'panic button' icon). It had to be used at least three times, otherwise the maint was scheduled with other like tasks... once a week.

Thank you for your suggestions. I don't know if NetMgr, RnTrack or

RnTrack is mentioned in Fidonews. Bon chance! (I'm exhausting my foreign language repertoire.)

Of course, always backup before experimenting. ;-)

Suffered? :-o I suppose that was with some old version, or maybe if you had your echos in Hudson.

I've been using Fmail (latest version) for several months now (all echoareas in JAM) and it works very well, no issues.

Close, but... that looks like French. :-) I'm a little further south. It should be "Buena suerte".

    Gracias.

That's what virtual machines (VMs) are for: keep your main node running unaffected, while trying an idea based on the node in another VM window. It's the only way to fly. ;)

My main node underwent a major crisis in August 2018. I had to move from a 20+ year old MS-DOS/Windows configuration to a Linux-based one. Fortunately, Wilfred was testing an early Linux FMail
solution. I chose FMail as I had tested an earlier version (1.22 back in early-90s, I think), so I was primed to use something familiar to my previous FastEcho/DOS. But. I found that FMail was still buried in mid-90s thinking, and soon got tired of it.

I've been using Fmail (latest version) for several months now (all echoareas in JAM) and it works very well, no issues.

Yes. It was the Hudson 'thing' that spoiled my fun. Hence the 'panic button' thing, whenever some newbie sysop dumped their messagebase on the network. Also activating newly-connected echo areas was a pain, in a Linux environment: no FConfig/linux. Both Wilfred and I had to use a Windows/32 somewhere to configure FMail and then copy the configuration to Linux. I think we were the only ones using the Linux version, so there wasn't any pressure to do something.

Don't get me wrong. Wilfred was a real champion.

    RnTrack is mentioned in Fidonews.
Will take a look at it.

It's real simple. You're welcome to my configuration file if it might be useful, though you may not need it as RnTrack is simple.

Yep. I studied _elementary_ French over 50 yeards ago.

    Gracias.

    Thank you! My apologies.
