Or they just decided to do a checkpoint for the fun of it, in case they snagged something... We've run into them sometimes on a holiday weekend, where they are just trolling for violations and/or drinking....
When I was in parking the local paper would announce various
upcoming drunk driving check points. I used to joke with the cops
"Well, now I know which streets to avoid this weekend". :)
Some were amused, others not too much.
Probably the ones that were amused knew that you weren't going to need
to "protect" yourself from being caught.... and knew your propensity for deadpan humor.... ;)
