Wouldn't it be better to change "user" to "person"? I think that
user is kind of informal these days.

How is "user" more informal than "person" in this context? And why would it be a problem?
"User" seems totally reasonable. It refers to the person using the BBS. "Person" might be a little too general or ambiguous. I'm not sure how "person" would make more sense here. Could you give some examples from text.dat where you think "person" would make more sense?

What if all "users" aren't "people"? You might offend a bot and instead of becoming self "aware", all AI might become self "awoke". :O

This reminds me of an old film from the 70's where a group of businessmen developed an adavanced simulation (similar to the matrix) in order to test out
variables that could affect the economy att he world level.
In the story an "simulated" person becomes aware his environment is not real because he can recallprevious versions each time a variable is altered, and also notices hgih profile people appearing and disappearing near a set of telephones in a public area.
He picks up the handset on one of the special courtesy phones, and the operator asks if he's ready to leave. He agrees and is transported to the outside world. He begins to question how he, a fabrication of a simulation can exist outside of it, then comes to the conclusion the "visitors" to his reality are not really outside, and are part of a larger simulation themselves.

User or operator are anologous to a driver operating an automobile. Works for me

"Person" sounds okay there but I don't think it makes much difference compared to "user".

Yes.. Though "person" and "user" don't have any gender or sex,
so I'm not sure how that's relevant.

I'll look for it. It was mentioned in a Youtube video about the something called the simulation conspiracy. before covid hit, the theory we live in a controlled environment was rising up the conspiracy charts.
But that isn't what we're talking about.
Why interject that? Crawl back into your hole.

Isn't that very human-centric? What about non-people and bots or ai personas. We wouldn't want to use non-inclusive terms.
