• Mail Server Issue

From SYS64738@1:103/705 to All on Mon Jul 29 05:19:20 2024
I was chatting with Nelgin in the #synchronet room about this and thought I'd probably better use the message forum. I'm unable to send any outbound internet email and I am also unable to receive any inbound internet email.
I've checked all of my port forwarding several times and it is all correct. I checked my sbbs mail settings several times, and it appeared to be all correct. However, in case I missed something, I wanted to share the mail portion from my sbbs.ini and see if anyone sees where I may have overlooked something. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your mail server log output is the thing that should provide the best/first clues as to where the problem is. Watch/capture your mail server log output (with debug level logging enabled) while you're attempting an operation and look for errors or warning messages to indicate best next steps.

Thanks, DM. I have been checking the logs. It seems that others can connect to port 25 (even myself thru telnet), but no email. So, I take it there was nothing out of the ordinary with my config for my mail server on sbbs.ini?

    Back to the drawing board...

Without an error message, log snippets or any kind of description of exactly what the problem/symptom is, I wouldn't know which of your settings to look at. Please provide more information.

Ok. I went to vert.synchro.net and tried logging in manually. There was an issue with the password. However, that has been corrected. I restarted everything, forced a network callout and a dyndns, and I am still having the same problem.

What's weird is that I did receive that email from nelgin from his mail server from his bbs, but if I try to send from my gmail account, I get an authentication error. Also, no email from geo.synchro.net can go to an outside server. I can email from one geo account to another geo account.

It was an incorrect password. You could test your login/password by loggin in using a terminal client to connect to Vertrauen's terminal server, as well.

Is this a situation where it was working and now it's not? If it's a first time setup and you're connecting from your residential broadband connection, especially with port 25, a lot of ISP's block that port, and you would need to contact them to specifically unblock port 25 to allow your mail server to work... I kinda skimmed thru these messages but that was my issue so hopefully this will help you if you've tried everything else, and nothing has worked, check on that as a possibility...

    Good luck..

Sort of. I've set up the mail server before under a different name, but didn't have this much trouble. I've checked with my ISP and they don't have port 25 blocked. Also, I can telnet into port 25 so I know it's not blocked.

    I do appreciate the advice.

So, I went to my gmail account and tried to send an email to my geo.synchro.net email address and was returned this error message:

553 Relaying through this server requires authentication. Please authenticate before sending.

On the bright side, if nothing else, I have an air-tight closed-circuit mail server! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As I mentioned before, I don't think mail.synchro.net will store
    and forward email for you.

    Yes, it will:
    https://wiki.synchro.net/howto:relay_smtp

Sorry, I meant to say "to you". For example, you wouldn't take email
for eotlbbs.syncho.net and forward it to my BBs, right?

Well, I just tried to send an email from my mail server to my gmail
account at 1913 local time. The logs don't show that it even
acknowledged that anything was being sent.

That doesn't make sense. MISSING 'HELO' received STARTTLS. I think you
have to send HELO or EHLO before you can send a STARTTLS

Ok. So, the deeper I dug, the more complex the problem became. I decided just to start over fresh and reinstalled sbbs. The problems I had before are gone except for one. I am unable to send email from my server to an outside server. I get this error:

7/31 11:13:45a 2620 SEND/TLS [127.0.0.1] ERROR 'Received TLS alert message: Handshake failure' (-15) setting session active

And the return email I get says:

    Reason:

    instead of the expected reply:
    "250 ..."
