We've had our BBS up for more than a few months now and I've never really put much effort into populating a file base... never really been a priority for me.

I'm wondering what the general feeling/consensus is for other sysops. Is there a big volume of traffic from file bases or do they mostly sit and draw dust?

Also, is there a good repository or library of files that every BBS should host? I've seen boards with massive file sections and wondered about the method to the madness (and source and process of loading them on the board).

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I put some old CDROMs on mine and there have been a lot of downloads from the HAM radio sections. Other than that, Sysops pretty much download a few doors but thats about it. It's been my experience that most callers call for messages and a few games.

Files are needed at times but no, they are not a big draw. I have a few
files that I like to have available online and others a free to browse
around and grab them if they choose.

Just put online whatever you choose. It's great too, if users upload files
to the BBS for anyone to grab if it intersts them but that also doesn't
happen often anymore.

There are file areas in Fidonet and other nets so you can connect to those areas if they are interesting to you or the users on your BBS. They arrive
with tic files that tickit will automatically import into your file areas
when they arrive. A bit of tinkering but it's not hard to setup.

I've not made it a priority. What you get from a BBS can usually be found quicker using Google and grabbed from a browser.
