Has anyone else seen this, or know what is happening here? I'm probably going to just move them somewhere and see if anything strange happens, but wanted to check first.

I hadn't noticed before, but yeah, I'm seeing the same thing on
my system. It's a bug. You can safelty delete the files.
This question is in regards to FidoNet usage. I have some downlinks, and lately I've noticed some strange files in ../data. I have the usual areas.bbs and associated areas.0.bbs / areas.1.bbs / etc... Those backups are caused by downlinks making changes to their feeds, which alters areas.bbs. So far, so good. But I'm also seeing files named like this:
AREAS1G0JDF
AREASFDpeMa
AREASXjWNXY

I see just a couple of these on my system. They're both dated August 7, 2022. I don't know what would have happened on that day to create those files..

They're caused by a remote Areafix message to your system. In case you missed it, DigitalMan said it was a bug and has committed a fix to sbbsecho.
