If I did go back to work, there is no way I could earn enough to pay
for health care. My wife had a serious bout with cancer and the costs
were over $180,000. I was operated on last year with a cost of
$47,000. There is no way I could earn that kind of money and that's
why we started Medicare/Medicaid in the first place. FDR was right
with the start of SS & LBJ was right with Medicare. It may not be
what you want, but there are too many people who need it.

I swore never to be silent whenever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the
oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never
the tormented. While this may be a noble endeavor, time often
restricts what we can continue to do. I do not spend nearly as much
time on usenet as you do. I simply don't have that kind of free time.

Right now Medicare payments are
being cut and my supplement insurance is picking up the difference. I
am therefore paying more for my supplemental insurance. If I have pay
more to keep the system solvent, I am willing to as long as I can
afford it. Some measure should be in place for those who can't. Right
now we had or used to have Medicaid. Many doctors/hospitals are no
longer accepting Medicaid. Is Medicare next?

More customers will never drive costs down, only up. Since I've been
using Medicare, doctors are doing their best to drain it from as many
sources as they can. I am diabetic. A few years ago, I was seeing my
doctor once a year. I saw my labs twice a year. If there was something
wrong in mid-year the doctor called me in or changed my meds without
ever seeing me. My control is still good. The ADA says I should target
to be below 7.0 AIC. I have been consistently between 7.0 and 6.0. No
change but BUT, today I see my doctor 8 times a year and the lab 4
times a year, every 3 months instead of 6. The ADA says I should be
between 120-130 for my Blood Sugar. I average below 120 yet one of my
health care professionals told us we need to be between 65 and 99. Why
the low numbers? It's called "Marketting". I can't allow myself to
get below 80 or I become hyper-glycemic. Since we are talking about a
serious health issue, let me add:
I have been diabetic since 2005. The only change in my blood sugar
took place when 3 doctors tried to change my meds 3 different times
when all was going well. The changes didn't work and I had to double
up on meds to get back under control. So the changes were not for me,
they were for my doctor. I have read almost everything I could get my
hands on about diabetes. I learned that what works for me may not
work for you or for anyone else. One has to play with things a little
to get a system down and stick with it unless a change occurs that you
didn't cause. I use Splenda for sweetener. Works just fine. I know two
people who cannot use it. It raises their blood sugar.
I can suggest one thing I did. A doctor once took me off Glipicide and
put me on Atcos which is being advertised by the legal guys as a drug
with possible side affects causing bladder cancer. I quit the Atcos.
I then asked my doctor a serious question. First telling him that I
am not the patient with 4 million dollars under my mattress. I don't
have enough to take care of all my meds. SO....which ones should I
stop taking that will extend my life as long as possible and give me
the most time to get my affairs in order since I am going to die? I
guess that shocked his ass because he came up with all sorts of
generic answers to my problem. I also did go off some of the drugs.
Right now I battle (if you can call it that) bladder infections. So
far I have had two days in the hospital, where it took two days to
drip 2 bags of saline solution into me (I was dehydrated). I had this
exact same thing two years ago in another hospital and they gave me 3
bags and let me go home that same day. I wasn't told to stay. Here,
they didn't want me to leave. In fact one of their Chinese nurses told
me I had e-coli. I didn't realize it at the time but they never took
any stool specimens. e-coli does not show up in the bladder according
to what I read. This China nurse spoke very bad engish. SO now they do
come here to work, build bridges and help themselves to my tax money.
I am going through test after test right now to find out why I had two
bouts with bladder infections. Right in the book on diabetes, that is
the cause and they can't cure diabetes or can they? With bridge
replacements, the Chinese are doing that right now and the idiots
blamed that on Obama. Well, he didn't do that. And I've carried on
long enough. I am not Obama's friend but I am not his enemy as either
position would not serve any purpose whatsoever. If we have any enemy
it is the congress, not the president regardless of who he turns out
to be. I know, I know the diehard wingnut has to disagree with me but
that's Ok. I disagree with them. Regards and good luck to anyone with diabetes.

I am no longer concerned with peaks. Now it's the valleys.
Sometimes I get too low and I can tell, I get the shakes.
For that I keep Oatmeal Raisin Cookies on hand. Two will
do the trick. If I get too low and need a quick flush, I drink
a glass of orange juice. Also have to add when I became
diabetic, I am over 6 feet tall and weighed in at 278. I now
weigh 238 and I gain more control of the diabetes as I lose.
I also take the dog out every evening. I walk 1 mile. If I
take my blood sugar reading before and after the walk, I
lose 30 points by walking the mile.
One other thing. I was taking Lovastastin for Cholesterol.
My doc sent me an email saying he was changing that to
Simvastatin. That one change 40 mg to 40 mg resulted in
an average lowering of my blood sugar of 30 points. One
other thing and I wouldn't take too much stock in this, in
fact I am afraid to try it. A penpal in Austria became an MD.
I told him my numbers and he said, "American doctors must
be getting a payback for the medicines they prescribe. Your
Cholesterol is not that high for a man your age. IF you stop
the cholesterol meds, you may find out that your diabetes
goes away. Yeah, I'm afraid but I have to add this. I went
on Lovastatin first. A year later he diagnosed me as being in
Adult Diabetes. Did it? I don't know and if Medicare goes
the way it seems to be going, (away) I may have to control
my diabetes with diet and exercize. I'll go vegan. It's either
that or move to Yuma where the Mexican border is reasonably
safe and I can jump across for doctor and Rx. There is an
entire town in Arizona called Green Valley. The average age
there is 76 years old. They are 20 minutes from the border so
I can guess why they live there. It's hot and no trees.

I have a set of diabetic inserts. They do work and I still
have the same ones prescribed to me 5 years ago. The
Diabetic shoes are more expensive and I'm told only are
supposed to last 6 months. I only use my inserts with
dress shoes.
For around the house I use sandals with Dr. Sholls and
other inserts in them. I use them even if I go out for a
short shopping trip, see a movie or go out to dinner. I
have 4 pairs of these slippers/sandals and even walk my
mile each night with them. I switch sandals during the
day I may use all 4 of them. My feet are bad but not
getting any worse.
And last, everyone is different. I had to experiment and
see what worked. I was using One-Touch tabs and my
insurance was paying for them. I used a lot of them.
Now that I am under control, I buy "Reli-On" tabs. I did
check them against One-Touch. The readings were the
same. I buy what I can afford and everyone is different.
Good luck with your diabetes.

The best health care I had in the last 15 years was by Kaiser
Permanente where doctors work directly for the company. I never met
one who was unhappy working for Kaiser.
I don't drink coffee, so I need no sweetener,
but my body makes insulin at a slow rate no
matter how much medicine I take, so eating
less per meal is the answer as long as the
A1c is below 7.0.
I have never missed a vote and almost always
vote against the encumbant. Not much else one
vote can do.
I do not do well with potatoes. I seem to do better with rice. I
actually like the fast dinners, I like Marie Callendar best.

Maybe you could try respecting your president and if you are so
against him, vote with your pen and not your mouth. You only know
what one party makes up about him. Do you even think that they will
approve of any democrat? You should expect their BS and take it with
a grain of salt. As you look at Obama's actions, try to understand
why. You won't have to look far, look at George W Bush. They don't
like blaming him but then they don't like blaming themselves for
anything.

Both parties spend money like it was theirs to do whatever they want
to do with it. They spend it differently. Democrats would see it go
to people while republicans want to go to businesses (that they are
invested in) Not so difficult to understand. But since that means I
have to pay their taxs so they won't have to, I'm going to fight them
here and in the trenches.

This has been an increasing problem. I was dumped by a doctor. He
billed my insurance didn't like what they paid him so he tried to bill
me for the difference. When I refused (Insurance company told me to)
I was unable to get in touch with him for an appointment or otherwise.
He even ordered some blood workup that was incomplete. He did that
3 times. When I came home one day from first seeing him, my neighbor
asked how it went. I told her who the doctor was and she said, "I
thought he was dead." A lot older than me he was. He was the doctor
who changed my Glipicide over to Atcos which is being advertised by
lawyers who sue for bladder cancer.
I know several people who too lump sums and regretted doing so. I
have two private pensions and they have both paid me more than I put
into them. In December I will be retired 5 years.
Living the life of an RV'er is not such a bad way to go. We have been traveling a lot and all along the routes we see permanent RV'ers
hooked up to the sites. I thought about doing that and if not for a
wife that insists on a nest somewhere, I would be full time Rv'ing
myself. There are clubs where you can join, pay the fees and even with
the fees spend less than $10 a night for a spot to park, water, sewer,
trash, Cable TV as well as Internet. The only extra is electicity.
There is no cheaper way to live.
I am as guilty, especially during the holidays.
Chocolate covered cherries, holiday cookies
which were shortbread, a dab of fudge and a
cherry or walnut cut in half. I did grow up in
a home that did not buy convenience foods.
My mother had diabetes and now I have it as well.
