Not exactly a glowing review, but probably better than what the film actually deserves. I don't know how any real Star Trek fan can
    tolerate
these new films. It's like they've turned Star Trek into something
    more
akin to Transformers - loud, cliched actionfests for a teen audience
    who
can't pull themselves away from Pokemon Go. I don't really blame Star Trek. It's Hollywood.

I prefer classic Star Trek myself, but I think even the older Star Trek
movies tended to be more action-oriented and a less cerebral than the TV
shows. For instance, a couple of the most popular Trek movies were The
Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home - IMO both a bit more action-oriented and less cerebral than the TV show. I suppose you could make a case that Star
Trek 6 (The Undiscovered Country), which was probably one of the more
popular Trek movies, was a bit more cerebral..

I suppose I agree with you, it's more Hollywood than Star Trek.

I don't know why they went back and started over with Kirk and his crew though.. I would have rather seen some more Star Trek continuing in the
Next Generation era. Even something between the original series and Next Generation would have been interesting. We have only seen the Enterprise B
and Enterprise C once each on screen.

The Undiscovered Country is one of my favorites of the older movies.

STB was my favorite of the Kelvin flicks as it was the closest to how the original characters acted. However, I was not a fan of the new ship, particularly, the warp nacelles; that bulbous front end just looks...bad. I wasn't crazy about the Engineering deck either; it looks too industrial for my tastes, and those large water pipes didn't help. The Bridge was too cluttered and bright, thanks to JJ's light streak filters.

As to the Prime movies, I wasn't a STTUC fan also. I'd say STTVH was my favorite, in terms of story. However, STTMP was the best, IMO, regarding sets, costumes, and adhearing to previously established canon; story-wise, it could've been better.

I thought the kelvin line of films were decent but they were not a replacement for what was out there. Just like you, I did not like the new ship at all, the overall design and the horrible looking nacelles.

All in all, it's a great attempt at trying to reboot the series but to me I just found it to be an action film with star trek components but maybe that's just me.
