It was a system running Synchronet that we think needs some extra config
work, it burped some packets in to a fsxNet node that had asked for a rescan
of some othernet messages being fed it by the system in question. It seems
like the rescan led to a dump of packets across a bunch of othernets (Fido, fsxNet etc.) because of something possibly not set correctly.
Sysop has been contacted and we're working to try and assist :)

    Yes ... looks like it.
But your system also forwarded the mails in question to me (and possibly others).
    Why
They should have been recognized as dupes and NOT sent forward to your links. So it seems there is also a bug and/or misconfiguration on your system.

Wow people use node systems that butcher mails in a way that they insert changed messages???

From my point of view this is terminally ill, and any such software should be immediately be replaced with something sane and much more bug free.

Has it be determined if it was a bug in the software or in the configuration?

Anyhow any software that CAN be configured in such a faulty way is not fit for the purpose, and should not be used from my point of view.

    Not intentionaly no.

The messages were not changed. SBBSecho was adding an origin line as it always does when it exports a local message (like this one I am writing now), and it was also adding an origin to messages that were rescaned from a local message base. That doesn't happen any more and SBBSecho also adds a RESCANNED kludge since an update a few days ago when messages are rescanned.

From my point of view this is terminally ill, and any such software should be immediately be replaced with something sane and much more bug free.

SBBSecho is still being maintained and developed so it's behaviour can be changed if needed, as in this case.

    to process mails worries me.

What is less good that software in such a sorry state was used on a live system.
Anyways ... I think I read that this catastrophic bug has been fixed.
So let us hope that nodes update quickly, and that SBBS very much improves their testing procedure to evade escape of alpha quality code into the wild.

You could call it a bug in the software (SBBSecho). It's been fixed.

What else should one call it??

A flaw, an over-sight, a lack of detailed requirements definition.

Anyways glad that it is fixed.
Hope the fix will be rolled out quickly, and that SBBS improves their testing rigorously in order to stop such huge bugs in the future.

It's open source software and freely available to everyone, immediately upon check-in. There's no "rolling out" to be done. The last official relase of "SBBS" was in 2015 included a version of SBBSecho that did not support rescan-via-AreaFix, so the feature (and thus the bug) was not present.
However, most Synchronet sysops run development builds at their discretion for testing purposes, very much in-line with the "experimental" nature of this network.

"SBBS" is not an organization or a person, so SBBS can't test anything. You may classify the addition of an origin line to re-scanned messages as a "huge bug", but it's been present in the development builds of SBBSecho since August 3 of 2016 and no one has reported the problem until this recent event. For such a "huge bug" it certainly didn't seem to impact very many sysops or users.
