I've just googled it actually and apparently it did get stored! that's amazing, i can get bamboozled again!

Yup, it's part of the broadcast singal that is stored on the tape. You need a certain type of video capture card to get that data off. I have one and that's what I've been doing. The results are at http://teletext.nigelreed.net and there are others too. You can find links on my page to other archives.
