• HP HP LaserJet M209dw printer refuses to print.

Printer refuses to print except a printer information page, that says:

your HP+ printer must be set up using the HP Smart app. Visit 123.hp.com
to download the app and complete the guided setup. Any pages you have
printed were intended for setup and have been exhausted. If you
completed setup, turn your printer off for at least a minute, then turn
it back on. Wait a few minutes to let your printer status refresh and
try to print again. visit hp.com/plus-support for additional setup help.

If I connect firefox to the printer at 192.168.1.126, the setup works,
    but it says:

Status: Set up the printer now.

Refresh. Click this to refresh the device status.

Printer setup incomplete. Your HP+ printer must be set up using the HP

    I tried factory reset:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7rIYF6LyEY

    Doesn't do the reset.

    https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Wireless-Networking-Internet/How-can-i-reset-laserjet-m209dw-to-the-factory-defaults/td-p/8366883

Press and hold the resume button on a printer turn the printer
ON and keep the button pressed for 15-20 seconds.

    Changes nothing.

I use the setup app, which says, in Spanish, that setup is incomplete,
to press + and follow the instructions. This does nothing. It does find
the printer, I tap on it, and I am returned to the first screen.

How can I make this blasted printer print again?

If it is contract a support contract with HP to feed me supplies, I will
take an axe and destroy the printer.

Anyway, it has the factory cartridge.

    I tried factory reset:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7rIYF6LyEY

    Doesn't do the reset.

Press and hold the resume button on a printer turn the printer
ON and keep the button pressed for 15-20 seconds.

    Changes nothing.

Anyway, it has the factory cartridge.

I've been through a similar process with HP printers.
I got them working using two hard-learned lessons.
    1. The HP Smart app DOES work, but it has to be left to its own devices
for a while, during which it appears to be doing nothing.
    2. Don't use additional action. That confuses things.

    So then, do this.
Remove the printer from Devices and Printers.

Where, in the computer? The computer is not involved, and anyway, it is
Linux. The configuration is supposed to be in the phone. The computer
goes by automatic printer on every session, the printer is not "installed".

Totally uninstall all remnants of HP Smart, and reinstall it (get it
    from the HP website).
Let it search for your wireless printer, and just leave it doing its stuff.

It is connected by ethernet cable.

You'll eventually see your printer appear in Devices and Printers,
ticked to indicate it's the default.
    You can then (as I've done) connect the printer to a USB socket;

But anyway, the printer does appear in the list after some time.

    It has no USB socket.

    and
another entry will appear in Devices and Printers; useful for future use without HP Smart.

Good luck. Patience will get you through.

The printer does appear. But it refuses to print. The (i) button is
highlighted soon after power up, and prints a page with the text I put
in the initial post. that I have to do something on the phone, that the
printer test period is passed and then the printer will print no more
until I do something on the phone. But the app on the phone does nothing.

This printer is intended to be used with a contract to replenish
automatically the toner. I asked the vendor who said it was not
necessary. Apparently it is mandatory. But the app will not say what is
exactly I have to do to make it work.

I can "print" in the computer, it does all the motions. But the actual
printer prints nothing. Just blinks the (i) button and says "no":

«Printer setup incomplete. Your HP+ printer must be set up using the HP
Smart app. Visit 123.hp.com to download the app and complete the
guided setup. Any pages you have printed were intended for setup and
have been exhausted. If you completed setup, turn your printer off for
at least a minute, then turn it back on. Wait a few minutes to let
your printer status refresh and try to print again. Visit
    hp.com/plus-support for additional setup help.»

But I can never complete the guided support, the app (on the phone) does
    not work.

    Q:

I bought hp laserjet m140we and after printing a few pages the printer
locked up and requires logging into hp smart

"Printer setup incomplete. Your HP+ printer must be set up using the HP

    additional setup help."

I Don't want to do that and just want to simply use the printer, why are
you forcing people to do that?

    A:

Why? Because you purchased a model that requires it and the vendor
should have made you aware. You need to purchase a non-E model to not
    have to sign up.
If you find the information provided useful or solves your problems,
help other users find the solution easier by giving kudos and marking my
    post as an accepted solution.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do
not work for HP nor speak for HP.

No, my vendor did say this was not necessary. And any way, the
application doesn't work and doesn't say what I need to do. It just loops.

While existing contracts will be honoured, HP has withdrawn their "e"

Perhaps your printer has got caught up in the changeover from subscription model ink to otc ink. Do you know if it performed any sort of firwmare
    update recently?

Before I exercised a $150 tantrum to alleviate my frustration, I'd
probably get a new toner cartridge to see if it starts working again.
If the printer logic thinks the toner is low, it ceases printing.
    However, the toner isn't cheap, either ($54 for 134A, $88 for 134X).

Apparently you can get replacement toners without the chip, but you have
to reuse the chip from the original toner; i.e., you're sliding in a new
toner cartridge while pretending it is the old toner cartridge. See:

    https://www.amazon.com/134A-Toner-Cartridges-Replacement-Compatible/dp/B0D3L1VYB5/ref=sr_1_6?crid=P9SDI8CPIIAN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5Qv2e-GIMvBTt6QaihwUl_SKnf50znHsYzt_ovFZ4-dETPFVVJi8ZMXntYQd3q3sED9PCCUauyKEabjmemjYhk5CVQITzgAtQlhJYr0SyuX-ttov2_Lh-

    sr=8-6

The photo on instructions mentioning having to use a drill and how to
move the chip to the new cartridge would push me off, and I'd pay more
to get a cartridge with its own new chip, especially since a different
serial number might fix the problem.

Back in the beginning of July, HP announced the end of their "HP+" and
    "Instant Ink" programs.
    (See https://tech.co/news/hp-e-series-instant-ink-discontinued)

While existing contracts will be honoured, HP has withdrawn their "e"
series printers from the market (so the article says), and will not
activate any new HP+/Instant Ink accounts.

Perhaps your printer has got caught up in the changeover from subscription >>> model ink to otc ink. Do you know if it performed any sort of firwmare
    update recently?

    No way to know.

The phone application has said there was an error since day one, but
printer printed just fine, for months, till today that it refuses.

I thought one day I would reset to factory to try the app again, but
procedure to reset does not reset.

I'm going to grind an axe and destroy it, physically.

Before I exercised a $150 tantrum to alleviate my frustration, I'd
probably get a new toner cartridge to see if it starts working again.

No way. Toner is about 70% full, and it prints perfectly the information papers.

If the printer logic thinks the toner is low, it ceases printing.
    However, the toner isn't cheap, either ($54 for 134A, $88 for 134X).

Not the case. Read the printer message:

«Printer setup incomplete. Your HP+ printer must be set up using the HP
Smart app. Visit 123.hp.com to download the app and complete the guided
setup. Any pages you have printed were intended for setup and have been exhausted.»

    Printer has a virus.

I tried that web address and it showed me a page that said 'click here
to find out how to print from Linux'

And that lead to 'page not found'

The app only apparently works on a mobile phone or Windows or a Mac.
Tough if you haven't got anything that can scan a QR code.

I would contact HP to service your printer and then refuse to pay when
    they have got it working.

The website is the typically woke piece of function free crap featuring smiling ethnic minority images with complete absence of any technical information and requiring you give the cunts an email address so they
can bombard you with spam for ever more.

I think the answer you don't want to hear is that HP are about to
discover the truth of the old adage 'go woke: go broke'

Buy a printer that definitely takes 3rd party toner and doesnt have all
    this shit.

And defecate in the one you have and send it back to HP

Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early
twenty-first century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally average temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and,
on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer
projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a rollback of the industrial age.

That's not a problem. The app itself can not solve "the problem", it
    loops. That's the problem.

I don't mind buying original HP toner. I do buy it. But I refuse to get
a contract to pay them an amount every month so that they send me the
package when the think I need one.

Even if it were possible, the app doesn't get there. It just loops.
