• OF TOPIC HP-7602 PRINTER SCANNER

From knuttle@21:1/5 to All on Thu Sep 12 17:32:37 2024
I just purchase the above printer and am impressed with the printer.

However I am fighting the HP Software. My computers are i5 and i7
processors with at least 8 GB ram, all three run Windows 10.

Using the HP software I can not obtain a scan to the computer on the
LAN. On one it will scan the document, on the other two it insist that I
have an HP Account. Is this a bug in poorly written software?
Is there a way to get around the HP Account when scanning form computers
on the same network as the printer?

I have tried alternate ways of accessing the print/scanner and I can get
the scans. I would like to use the HP software IF POSSIBLE.

I think you can only scan using USB cable connected to the printer. This
means trying anything on the network may not be possible.

For scanning you need something that is bi-directional so that your
computer can also receive the scanned document. I have Xerox copier <https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xerox-Wireless-Multifunction-Printer-Printing/dp/B09B1BC6KJ>
and  I had to buy a separate USB cable to scan documents. I know you
said one of your computers can print over the network but I think it
might also have a USB cable attached. I might be wrong about this.

One thing I should inform you about HP printers is that DON'T EVER
UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE OF THE PRINTER because this will disable use of
compatible cartridges or tonners. I had a very good colour printer and
somehow, foolishly I upgraded the firmware and now I can't use cheap
tonners because they don't work now. Also, HP are not allowing users to download original firmware because they want to make sure users buy
their own expensive products. That's HP for you.

It is not the same HP it used to be.

And the behavior you see is NOT a bug.
(There are plenty of discussion threads on websites about this.)

An example of a separate software for scanning, is VueScan from hamrick.com . There should be a list somewhere, of all the scanners it can operate.

Epsom makes some solutions too (they have an AIO tank printer or two),
and the software may behave a bit differently for LAN activities.

Epsom still have "account" like HP, but it is not clear whether this is
just a dynDNS-type solution, or a full-on Cloud like HP runs. But that
would allow scanning from anywhere (mobile/phone usage).

It's actually pretty hard to review the available information for
AIO printers, to figure out the gotcha in them (until it is too late).

My Canoscan I got last year, is an example of a "cheap" scanner> It's an attempt to do a traditional $100 scanner.

The Epson in this example, has an ADF and does double-sided properly (or
so they claim). It's still a cheap scanner (1200 DPI?), but it also comes with a couple
    pieces of third party software.

I'm not sure whether this will be of use, but there is something called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), built into Windows for many years now.
It's mostly replaced TWAIN as a scanning protocol. I've used it myself from VBScript with my HP Envy. It even gives me options that the HP GUI does
not. If the Envy is turned on then WIA works. As I understand it, MS
    required
device makers to implement WIA interfaces.

What I don't know is whether it will be any better at communicating
with the scanner not directly connected, or whether it can bypass apparent security issues. I've never allowed any networking functionality with my computers, so I'm not familiar with those problems. But it might be
    worth a try.
You should be able to find free software that provides a frontend to WIA.

I feel similarly. HP printers are a hassle and the ink is crazy expensive, but at one point I got an Epson and it was much worse. It seemed
to judge ink levels with a timer and once it decided the ink was gone
it refused to print. Maddening! Especially since I only print things about
once every 1-2 months. With the HP, the color cartridge can be gone,
the black can be dried, but if I soak the bottom of the black in water
and get it going, the HP is perfectly willing to give it a try.

I fought with the HP Smart software this morning.  I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall after much fussing.

I can scan and print from other programs like Irfanview, Windows Scan and Fax, and Word Perfect.  But Windows Smart refuses to find the HP-7602 Printer.

PS: I like the printer even though HP does it darnedest to make you dislike it.

I feel similarly. HP printers are a hassle and the ink is crazy expensive, but at one point I got an Epson and it was much worse. It seemed
to judge ink levels with a timer and once it decided the ink was gone
it refused to print. Maddening! Especially since I only print things about once every 1-2 months. With the HP, the color cartridge can be gone,
the black can be dried, but if I soak the bottom of the black in water
and get it going, the HP is perfectly willing to give it a try.

But this is a *tank* printer, another animal entirely.

This is not the usual scam, it's a different kind of scam.

Both HP and Epson make AIO tank printers.

A set of inks on the Epson, is about $60, but they are
bottles of ink, not carts. The ink just pours into
a vat inside the printer :-) Vast quantities of ink.
You can splash around in it.

Any time a printer has that much ink, you also have to
be aware there could be a "waste tank" that needs cleaning
    occasionally. Traditionally, inkjet printers would
overflow their waste tank and make a mess on the desk.
Any printer which has an "auto-clean" function, strives
to pump all the tank ink, into the waste vat. If you go
on vacation, there could be a very large "splat" pouring
down the side of the desk.

Both the HP and the Epson have "ink level windows" on the
front of the printer. The per-page printing
cost is supposed to be really cheap, even though the printer
is not rated for "printing like a demon". Back in the day,
our network printer at work, used to print off 2000 sheets a day.
And the paper bin had a motor, to lift and lower the stack
of paper in the bin :-) I think you could put four packages
of paper in it, before it was "full". These tank printers, that
quantity of paper is what it allows in a *month* of usage.

Of course, people don't print like they used to. Printing
is a bit more selective now

So while it has the ink for a good time, it's the potential
for the software to get in the way, that makes or breaks
one of these devices. And HP has "spared no effort", to ruin it.

Indeed. My Epson and HP are both cartridge printers. One let
me keep printing. The other made me stop randomly. I've never
used a tank printer, or even seen one.

computer.   If you want to USE THE LAN PRINTER, you must register, and download the land printing module that allows you to scan through the LAN.

Interesting. These companies just keep coming up with reasons
why they need personal info from you. I'm guessing that your
module is calling home with "telematics".

It is working out when his tank needs more bottles of ink :-)

If you log every print job, you can count the sheets, and
estimate when his next order of bottles will be inbound
    without him knowing.

Normally, they like to push cartridges on people.
As an example of how "popular" their ink program is,
there is an ink cartridge from the program, sitting on
the top of the community mail box, and absolutely no one
has taken it home :-) My guess is, none of my fellow
    citizens. have HP printers.

My HP printer also offered to sign me up for automatic ink
shipments. Though it has no idea how much ink is left. It
always estimates that I have "just a bit".

My new clothes washer offered to set me up
with an app so that I can talk to it from upstairs, and tries
to force me to wash the washing machine (!) every 30
cycles, which involves buying a bottle of special soap.

There's always some kind of logic for collecting data.
The functions of spying and features are not separate.
There was an interesting article awhile back at Ars Technica:

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/01/half-of-smart-appliances-remain-disconnected-from-internet-makers-lament/

Manufacturers are frustrated because they thought giving
their microwave or frig wifi capability would give them spyware
data and extra income from frivolous services. But few people
are getting the apps. The "features" are mostly pointless and
increase costs. (Auto repair costs have gone crazy. For example,
$15K to fix a Rivian bumper. They used to be snap-on plastic.
They probably still are, but now they're loaded with sensitive
    electronics.)

Given all that, I have no doubt whatsoever about what HP is
doing. If it weren't spyware there would be no need to "register"
to download the missing functionality for LAN operation.

This is essentially the whole idea of cloud. It's also the direction
that Win10/11 are increasingly moving. People have got so used to
it that they accept tech companies, apppliance manufacturers
and even carmakers controlling the devices they bought. And there's
always some kind of logic, however thin. ("Why go all the way to
the cellar to check your wash when you can call the machine from
the living room?") It's the gradual "kioskification" of devices. Why
sell a washing machine when you can sell a laundromat for the same
price and then charge per wash? Why sell office software when you
    can rent it?

Why not get the apps? Because the services are useless and idiotic.
And because it's just a ruse for data collection and/or selling idiotic
extras. People should know this by now.

There've already been serious, real world ramifications,
such as people having their car insurance doubled because GM or some
other car company sold detailed driving data to their insurance company --
data they had no business ever collecting in the first place.

I saw a wonderful quote recently from Meredith Whittaker, the very clear-speaking CEO of Signal, who started at Google but eventually
    found them too immoral:

    =======
"The short answer here is that AI is a product of the mass surveillance business model in its current form. It is not a separate technological phenomenon...Well, AI is the narrative. It’s not the technology.
    Surveillance
and infrastructure are the material conditions."
