• How do update video and other drivers.

From micky@21:1/5 to All on Fri Oct 25 15:52:42 2024
For 4 years or so, I have had this 9-years-old or less Acer laptop
running windows 10 (but I also included the win11 ng).

The hdd had failed so my installation is totally new.

I've noticed, or it has changed????, and now several video anomalies
    exist.

Once in a while on a web browser, one color is missing, even though the
same color appears elsewhere. How can that be?

On google maps, if one has a location in the section at the left, under Reviews, all 5 stars are always filled in with black. To see the actual
stars, I have to go to the other computer.

When filling out a web survey or personal settings for a bank etc., I
click on a circle and often there is no change.

I think I read here that this is the driver, right?

But is it the Display adapter or the Monitor driver? Or both?

    Or video controller?

If I had gone no further, how would I know which of these 3 I should
    pursue?

Right now Display adapter has over 160 driver files listed in Device
    Manager. That seems strange!

The currently installed Monitor driver is called Generic PnP Monitor.
    VGA driver 10.0.19041.4355, 6/21/2006 on Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 monitor.sys

I can't find a video controller in Device Manager! Under Sound, video,
and game controllers there are 3 items, all about audio.
When I try to update driver, it says it has the best driver now.
    Generic PnP monitor.

Is that for sure? It's the best? Yet it mentions Windows update and
    the device manufacturer's website.

So I go to acer.com. I thought I did this when I first installed
    windows.

The only thing video related is Video Driver. And I find one for Intel
and one for Nvidia, but since Device Manager had said "6/21/2006 on
Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500" that means for certain I want the Intel one,
right? The instructions don't even hint how to choose.

I dl the Intel version and extract the files which are from 2015,

It has instructions that end with clicking on "igdlh.INF" They really
    mean igdlh64.INF, right?
It's in the Graphics subdirectory of these new driver files. It's
    the only .inf file.

    Extra stuff:
The readme.txt says in part, "Your computer is configured to run the
WinSAT* test, which determines whether the computer can support the
Windows Aero* desktop theme. The test will run after this driver is
installed and the computer is restarted. If your computer can support
it, the Windows Aero desktop theme will automatically be enabled.

This test will take approximately 10 seconds."

"The Windows Aero desktop theme will automatically be enabled." The
nerve of them!!!! But the other readme file says this can be deselected
    during installation. Okay.

I normally try Intel's web page for Intel drivers.
I guess you lost any documentation from Acer or any driver discs etc?
    Those are gold to me!

I got impatient and figured maybe I knew the answer and went to Device

best drivers for your device are already installed", even though what I
have now is some generic driver that Device Manager says is dated in
2006 VERSUW the one I tried to install that came straight from Acer,
which made the laptop, and the files are dated 2015.

Does that seem right to you?

Should I install it by using the setup.exe that was included in the Acer
driver zip file? That won't check if it's better or worse, will it?

BTW, worth noting that Windows\system32\drivers has 491 items in it, but
when one uses a 32-bit file manager, it only has 5, two subdirectories
nd 3 files, one each sys, dls, and txt file. Even all 10 log files

You are right. These challenges may seem like a burden, but it feels

You are my favorite animator :-)

You mean to tell me, you didn't even have one stinking backup
for that C: drive ? Not one ?

Don't forget, that Microsoft has been damaging the Win10 support
recently, and some automatic things aren't working right. In particular,
some obscure "one only" drivers that were located and put on the
server, those are gone. Like, I have some video cards that only
have the one, compatible driver. They no longer are available
via Windows Update, so I have to use my knowledge of their existence
and track them down like I did seven years ago.

This is why you BACK UP really old kit, to avoid
    exactly the mess you're in.

A monitor driver has three files, and uses an INF.

Here is me, hunting down my monitor driver. The ICM is a color file
that gives the mean color response of the monitor. Using a Spyder screen calibrator would allow a specific calibration for this monitor. You
can right click the INF and select "install" to install a driver like this.
The files download in a .cab file.

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=x193w

    -a---- Mon, 9, 21, 2009 7:51 PM 7479 x193w.cat
    -a---- Mon, 8, 3, 2009 2:36 AM 102804 X193W.ICM
    -a---- Mon, 8, 3, 2009 2:36 AM 2823 X193W.inf

But Microsoft has used yet-another driver in this instance
and isn't using that one. Too easy I guess.

The monitor does not need a driver, and the color would only
be off a hair without it. The reason I can say that, is for
a number of years, they insisted on not installing a driver for it.
The policy is ever-changing. It hardly seems important if
they can faff about like that.

    Paul

And I do have problems rendine
rendering colors, as described in the original
    post.

So after extracting all the files from the intel version zip file I dl'd
from the Acer page for MY model, I clicked on setup.exe and immediately
got a box "The driver being installed is not validated for this
computer***. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

    Setup will exit.

Would you like more information. Click yes to be directed to the Intel
    support website"

***How could that be, unless I was supposed to use the Nvidia version.
There were two versions offered, Nvidia and Intel, with no help in
deciding which one one should use. https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/Aspire_E5-573

    Which one do I want?

More precisely than I quoted it the first time, it said in the
    Properties box for the monitor,
    General tab:
    "Generic PnP Monitor
    Device type Monitor
    Manufacturer (Standard Monitor Types)
Location on Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500
    The device is working properly"

    Driver tab
"Driver provider Microsoft -- so it's not Intel!!! My bad.
    Driver date 6/21/2006
    Driver version 10.0.19041.4355
    Digital signer Microsoft Windows."

So the driver is by Microsoft, not intel. (Athough the .inf files for
    both drivers is copyright Intel.)

So should I try the Nvidial driver and back it out if it makes things
    worse? ;-)

have now is some generic driver that Device Manager says is dated in
2006 VERSUW the one I tried to install that came straight from Acer,
which made the laptop, and the files are dated 2015.

Does that seem right to you?

Should I install it by using the setup.exe that was included in the Acer driver zip file? That won't check if it's better or worse, will it?

BTW, worth noting that Windows\system32\drivers has 491 items in it, but
when one uses a 32-bit file manager, it only has 5, two subdirectories
nd 3 files, one each sys, dls, and txt file. Even all 10 log files
aren't seen in the 32-bit file manager.

    Micky

If I had gone no further, how would I know which of these 3 I should
    pursue?

Right now Display adapter has over 160 driver files listed in Device
    Manager. That seems strange!

The currently installed Monitor driver is called Generic PnP Monitor.
    VGA driver 10.0.19041.4355, 6/21/2006 on Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500
    monitor.sys

Okay.

What this scheme does, is removes the need for two graphics chips to be
driving the panel at the same time. The frame buffer resides in system memory/ Either the Intel GPU or the NVidia GPU can be the source of video frames.
Or if desired, two memory buffers can be composited before being rendered/displayed on the LCD panel.

The executable "dxdiag.exe" is an opportunity to display something of
the GPU information. There are also status indicators for whether
some operations are accelerated or not. But some of the test displays
(rotating cubes, Pong game type display) are not there any more.

Lower end laptops, like my AMD laptop, are missing all the fun.
And are quite ordinary. Not having the thing on the right, extends
battery life, as at idle, there might be three less watts wasted.
The thing on the right can have its own graphics chips and sometimes
they are affixed to the top of the graphics chip on the right. Whereas
the iGPU (integrated GPU) in this case uses only system memory for
both textures and the double-buffered frame buffer.

I would think there would be at least one entry (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter)
if no manufacturer specific drivers were installed after a Windows 10 install.

Maybe an entry under "Display Adapters" plus an "Unknown" second entry,
as I don't think a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is needed immediately
for the GPU on the right.

In this example, it is likely all their drivers were installed.

    https://www.asus.com/ca-en/support/faq/1038387/

For the most part, this should be a "discoverable" situation by the user.
See that MBDA driver (1024x768) is present, install the proper driver (native res),
see the second device has no driver, install a driver. The automation *used*
to be able to figure this out, but I'm losing confidence these days
because of some of the year 2015 behaviors I've been seeing.
In the year 2024, it seems it is up to the user to tip everything upright,
My Test Machine no longer gets the System section of Device Manager
loaded properly, just as happened when Windows 10 was invented.

Sorry micky, this is over my head, I can't comment more. I hated the days where I had to find
drivers, thus the comment about original driver cd's being gold.

That makes it seem like it's the browsewr, but when using Firefox on the
other computer the colors of the stars in googlemap ratings are fine, so

So does that not mean the problem 2 is not merely the browser or merely

    https://cameratico.com/color-management/firefox/

    https://cameratico.com/tools/web-browser-color-management-test/

Using "dxdiag.exe" provided by the OS, you can check and
see if the graphics driver is an XDDM or a WDDM driver.
Windows 10 seems to need a WDDM driver for 22H2 to accept it.
21H2 would run with an XDDM driver.

And that's assuming some driver is actually loaded.

OK, how is the Device Manager looking now ?

Well, on the laptop when I tried to update with the files from Acer, it
wouldn't let me. I reported it somewher in this thread. I think it
said it was not a newer version. Later I realized I was supposed to be
looking at the Display Adapter and the date for that driver was 6/9/17,
which is newer that the Acer files from 2015.

I didnt think until now to look at the display adapter for the desktop.
    It's a different one, not Intel 5500, but 4600. It's dated 1/21/2020,
newer yet. Maybe that accounts for why Firefox on the desktop has
solved problem 2, but it doesn't account for why Edge and Chrome on the
laptop also don't have problem 2, but Firefox on the laptop does.

A guy from the Acer Community wanted me to stop usilng Ffirefox, but I
like it. It's easier to use.

Unless someone has a better idea, I may just put up with this until I
buy a new laptop. But I've gotten busy with other things so that won't
be for months or years, so I'm sorry FF ixn't fixed..

    [Responding on a.c.s.firefox only]

How come? What if someone only reads the other ng?

So, in Fx some _elements_ on a webpage are the wrong colour or
missing (black)? It that essentially the problem?

Is graphics acceleration (aka hardware aceleration) turned on?
    Try turning it off.

Okay, it was set to Use recomended performance settings, and the only
setting there was was to have hardware acceleration on when available.

So I turned if off, but it won't take effect until I restart windows.
I'll do that a bit later and plan to get back to you.

    Thanks.

I restarted Windows and it didn't work. I can only check the yellow vs.
black stars on reviews in Google maps. I'm assuming the other two
problems were't fixed either. I can live with it and maybe it will
encourage me to buy another laptop.

One interesting thing is that google maps, if you, say, search for
something that has more than one location, it will list them in a column
on the left, including addresses and ratings, and in that case, even
when it's not working right, it will work right in this case -- some of
the stars in the ratings will be yellow/gold and some will be black.

But if you click on a single location on its name in the map, and it
opens an individual "window" on the left, and you click on Reviews (if
it has reviews) all of the stars will be black, on my laptop. You'd
think the rendition would be the same in these two so similar
    situations, but they are not.

    Extra stuff:
The readme.txt says in part, "Your computer is configured to run the
WinSAT* test, which determines whether the computer can support the
Windows Aero* desktop theme. The test will run after this driver is
installed and the computer is restarted. If your computer can support
it, the Windows Aero desktop theme will automatically be enabled.

This test will take approximately 10 seconds."

"The Windows Aero desktop theme will automatically be enabled." The
nerve of them!!!! But the other readme file says this can be deselected during installation. Okay.

    TL-DR

Yes. Nvidia only applies if you have an Nvidia Display Adapter
    Device Manager\Display Adapters

Ah, no. It's the Intel HD Graphics 5500.

Some Acer and other brand laptops may have two on-board(the primary on
the cpu and a secondary(optional included chip on mobo) Display
Adapters. Intel and Nvidia. These devices were built with a primary
Display Adapter and and secondary optional(1,2, or 4 GB). The Nvidia
Nvidia is primarily gaming and only selective games. While it can be the >default, the onchip Intel adapter is the design intent and should be used.

    Very interesting.

I dl the Intel version and extract the files which are from 2015,

When you accessed the Acer devices drive site:
    - Did you provide the Acer serial number or the optional SNID # to
ensure you have the exact and correct list of all available drivers(not
just graphics) for that model device.

I downloaded and used the Acer tool to retrieve my serial number and
SNID, and I put each of them in the field, and got back a message in
each case, Not Found. Strange, hun? The box is only 9 years old
afaik, why would the record not be found?

So I used the model number, also from the Acer tool, and the same as
    what MSINFO32 shows.

The model number took me to https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/Aspire_E5-573 from
where I dl'd both VGA driver zip files.

"The Windows Aero desktop theme will automatically be enabled." The
    nerve of them!!!!
    - Where have you been. Aero was discontinued in Windows 8 and not
included in Windows 10. The line items means nothing beyond a
possibility that this laptop was built as a Win8 device.

Oh. Yes, maybe built for win8 (9 years ago?) And it turns out, it
gave me the opportunity to uncheck the enable box.

It was after that I got the error message. I clicked on setup.exe and
after accepting their terms etc., I got a box "The driver being
installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the
appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

    Setup will exit..."

I got this Intel driver straight from Acer*** and now they say it's not validated for this computer. How could that be?

    https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/Aspire_E5-573

Aha, google gives a lot of hits on "The driver being installed is not
validated for this computer.". The first hit was about Intel graphics
drivers. "If you see this error message, your computer manufacturer
wants you to install drivers from their website, not directly from
Intel. [But I was doing that.] But there's a way to bypass this message
and install the Intel drivers anyway."

"This occurs because your computer manufacturer has changed a setting in
the Intel graphics drivers it preinstalled, indicating the standard

with a Dell monitor, ALSO showed and still shows the stars in the right
colors. That was when I started strongly suspecting the Acer laptop.
How can the same version of Firefox render the color of the stars
    differently on different computers?

**I had checked MSINFO32 and it makes no reference to Nvidia, and Device Manager has only one entry for Display Adapter. Is that enough

    The machine is highly integrated.

    https://www.laptop-schematics.com/userfiles/schm/V3574.png

There should be two graphics device entries in Device Manager.

NVIDIA GeForce 940M (4GB DDR3) \___ Presumably two chips or four chips,
NVIDIA GeForce 940M (2GB DDR3) / room for four chips on PCB.

    Intel Iris Graphics 6100 \

    Intel HD Graphics 520 \
Intel HD Graphics 4400 \___ Various types CPU+PCH die in one package 15W power
    Intel HD Graphics (Broadwell) /

Ton of drivers, sort by date. Many entries 705.7MB (same driver).
Update details say it is AMD64 so it is for a 64-bit OS.

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=GeForce+940M++windows+10

Sort by date. I included the keyword "Intel" to get the right bunch. You can adjust
according to the VEN/DEV (doing Properties in Device Manager, Details, Hardware IDs).
Or use the known CPU string determination, use the Intel ark site, and get the correct graphics designation (5500 or whatever).

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Intel+HD+Graphics+5500

You're an experienced user, you can do it! :-)

Make sure no hardware is turned off at BIOS level.
The owner of the machine might have discovered a reason
why the NVidia portion needed to be turned off. I don't
think it can run without the Intel portion (Microsoft Basic Display Driver loaded to Intel, at a minimum).

If i was having this much trouble reaching Nirvana, I would have
run a Linux and an "inxi -F" by now, and got some details on the thing,
to match with the above (or not).

Some machines, like HP, they have so many motherboards for the one freaking model number, you can't figure anything out from here. You have to be
sitting in front of it, to nail it down. This one shouldn't be quite that bad.

I've been following this thread a bit, but after some 20 responses,

So I have to ask: Doesn't Acer have support software to tackle driver problems like that?

For example I use HP laptops and for many, many years, they come with
the 'HP Support Assistant' program, which has both a 'Fixes &
Diagnostics' section and a 'Software & Drivers' section, exactly for the
    kind of problems/questions you're having.

So you may want to have a look if Acer has similar software. Perhaps

Never mind eliminating what you do *not* have. Concentrate on what you
    *do* have!

'System Information' (i.e. msinfo32.exe) has on the (Components ->)
Display tab, the 'Adapter Type' - i.e. brand name - which you *do* have
and in Device Manager, the 'Display adaptors' branch should indicate the
same brand and product range (for example in my case 'AMD Radeon (TM) Graphics'). With that information, you should be able to tell the brand/manufacturer, i.e. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, etc..

I've been following this thread a bit, but after some 20 responses,
you still don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Perhaps
other Acer (preferably laptop) user can chip in.

It's a Windows 8 era laptop with Windows 8 era drivers on the website.

Generally there are no free lunches at a manufacturer site. They
tend to have drivers for the OS they claimed to support when it was
introduced. A Win8 laptop will not be getting Win11 drivers or have
a Win11 section added to the web page.

Device Manager would have <unknown> this or that, if there was
something that did not have a driver, and you can check the HardwareID
    for more information about it.

Like you say, the exercise starts with identifying what hardware is on
    there, then work from there.

Micky has enough computers, he must have done this exercise before.

While Windows 10 at its peak, could install all the drivers, it
does not do that today. And that's why we have to answer the question
today, because the wheels are falling off the thing. If I install
Windows 10 right now on the X79 Test Machine, Microsoft no longer
loads the "System Items" drivers for me... the behavior being *exactly*
the same as it was in 2015. If I want to fix that, I can do it, but
it's a nuisance and a waste of time.

    Well maybe.
Based on your recent info, I removed the 1 TB SSD for Win10 Pro and replaced with a blank Micron 250 SSD.
     - Used Diskpart to create the four partitions(System, MSR, Windows and WinRE[1024 GB] and used the MCT 22H2 created ISO(install.wim)to a bootable USB for install of Win10 Pro.
     - Device was originally built with Win10 Home in 2017, later(shortly after first use) product key updated to Win10 Pro. Device has an Intel UHD Graphics 620 and had an as-shipped Intel Graphics driver 22.20.16.474 driver date 2017/09/26.

Post install Win10 Pro, no activation required(Microsoft account used for final setup, no Local Account).
Device Manager shows Intel driver 25.20.100.6576 driver date 2019/02/07.

i.e. This, at least to me, seems to indicate that Windows 10 may not be like it was in 2015. Additionally, since I did not install the initial driver that came with the device, then it seems reasonable that Windows 10 install/setup/update installed the
2019 era driver rather than what was or may have been available in 2017(or 2015).
     - fyi...Windows Update post install pushed down the June 2024 LCU/SSU for updating before offering the Oct 2024 22H2. This would seem to indicate the ISO or some files pre-date the June 2024 LCU.

The above may or may not apply to an older device that was originally Windows 8, though it does appear that Win10 did update to a later driver than 2017 or 2015.

In this picture, the one on the left is when Microsoft finally fixed
the driver cleanup. The one on the right is what happens if I install
    Windows 10 today.

    [Picture]

    https://i.postimg.cc/ZRsW0dvs/Win10-Automated-Driver-Cleanup.gif

Initially, around 9850 or so, it also looked like the thing on the right,
as Microsoft did not have the logic ready at the time to finish the
drivers. And for some reason we have progressed backwards. By manually requesting certain items, it seems the catalog server has been damaged
a bit (stuff removed). So it may not be a logic failure after all,
but a "content failure". But I'm not interested in root causing
this stuff, except to say, some human at Redmond did this, and
knows exactly what they did. And someone told them to do it.
Inertia is one of the great features with computers, stuff
can work if you just walk away and stop meddling.

The hdd had failed so my installation is totally new.

I've noticed, or it has changed????, and now several video anomalies
    exist.

    1) Once in a while on a web browser, one color is missing, even though the >>same color appears elsewhere. How can that be?

When I actually checked this, it was with the same browser, Firefox, on
my desktop computer, and there the colors were fine. So that made me
think the problem was in the laptop computer, but see the next section.
I wish I could test it some more but I've long forgotten what webpage it
    was.

Today I found a fourth example, like the previous quoted paragraph, of
color problems for Firefox on the winHome10 laptop, but not in Chrome on
the same computer, and not in Firefox on the winPro10 desktop. An
    easily reproduced example.

I'm a little tired of pursuing this but I wanted to report it,

I get blood tests at Quest Diagnostics, which operates in all 50 US
states iiuc and 2 territories and 4 other countries, and the reports
are posted in my part of theri webpage, and when the test result is
good, there is a bright green rectangle around the value, and when the
result is bad there is a bright red rectangle around the value. But in Firefox on the laptop, there are no rectangles, there are no signes of
the rectangles, no outlines, no nuttin'.

if you want I'll find that part of the code for their webpage that says
there is a rectangle and color it should be, and I can post it here. Do
you think that would give a clue as to where the problem was?

    2) On google maps, if one has a location in the section at the left, under >>Reviews, all 5 stars are always filled in with black. To see the actual >>stars, I have to go to the other computer.

On the other computer, I'm running the same version of Firefox, and the >colors are correct. That was true months ago and still true today. But >someone suggested the problem is Firefox, so on *this* computer, the
Acer laptop, I tried Edge and Chrome, and on both, the colors are fine.

That makes it seem like it's the browsewr, but when using Firefox on the >other computer the colors of the stars in googlemap ratings are fine, so
that makes it seem like it's the computer.

So does that not mean the problem 2 is not merely the browser or merely
the computer but for some wierdo reason, the combination of the two?

3)When filling out a web survey or personal settings for a bank etc., I >>click on a circle and often there is no change.

When I tried the most recent survey, because I had answered it, it
wouldn't display the questions again. So Problems 1 and 3 are not as
    easy to test again.

I think I read here that this is the driver, right?

But is it the Display adapter or the Monitor driver? Or both?

Or video controller? --- Not the video controller.

The currently installed Monitor driver is called Generic PnP Monitor.
    VGA driver 10.0.19041.4355, 6/21/2006 on Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 >>monitor.sys

And I find one for Intel
and one for Nvidia, but since Device Manager had said "6/21/2006 on >>Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500" that means for certain I want the Intel one, >>right? The instructions don't even hint how to choose.

I dl the Intel version and extract the files which are from 2015,

It has instructions that end with clicking on "igdlh.INF" They really
    mean igdlh64.INF, right?
It's in the Graphics subdirectory of these new driver files. It's
    the only .inf file.

I did that. It's been two weeks and I can't remember exactly why that

How do you know these things.

I looked at the motherboard documentation, which shows a layout
and there was a declaration of the NVidia chip used. There is
room for four VRAM, depop two of them, makes a "cheaper laptop".
Depop the NVidia section entirely, makes the "cheapest laptop".

i did not back this up, by attempting to locate all possible
    laptop model numbers.

There are various hardware utilities (besides Device Manager),
if you need to know about hardware. But people have different
tastes in what they are willing to use, so there's not much point
going there. You probably know of better utilities than I do,
    as I don't collect those.

After looking at the stuff enough, both Firefox and Chrome
seem to be using Google Angle (DirectX to OpenGL conversion).
In addition, the Angle driver seems to include webGL capability.
It seems Google fixed the missing WebGL issue (it was mentioned
at one point, as being missing). Consequently, Firefox and
Chrome *could* have the same render path (Angle). But the one difficulty
with this observation, is Firefox is 5X slower using that
render path, than Chrome is. So "something is wrong" with
whatever Firefox does, on Windows. If you ran Linux and compared
Firefox to Chrome, I bet the colors on both are the same.

I have been unable to narrow it any more than that. It
*looks* like Firefox does not have accelerated WebGL on
Windows. That's a different software path, and maybe some
color table varies as a result.

Remember, that Firefox at one time, had a hwaccel setting,
as certain hardwares needed to be blacklisted (might crash if
used). There have then, been controls for limiting what
cases the acceleration would be enabled in hardware. Yet,
when I check these sorts of issues, there's no actual evidence
    it is using software render.
