• Disabling the Connected Devices Platform Service and Connected Devices

From John C.@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 20 06:04:28 2025
I don't use bluetooth. In fact, my computer doesn't have any bluetooth capabilities and that's the way I like it.

The extremely limited descriptions for both the Connected Devices
Platform Service and the Connected Devices Platform User Service
basically say, "This service is used for Connected Devices Platform
scenarios" WTF??? Can't M$ do a better job of providing a description
    than that??

Oh well. A search on the internet provides more on those services:

    https://appuals.com/what-is-the-connected-devices-platform-service-and-should-it-be-disabled/

    https://windowsreport.com/cdpsvc/

    https://thegeekpage.com/how-to-disable-connected-devices-platform-service-cdpsvc-to-fix-high-disk-usage/

Do any of you have this service disabled and if so, did disabling it
    cause any problems?

    TIA.

I have CDP Service and CDP User Service disabled, along with many others.
I don't use bluetooth devices or Xbox, and it did not cause any problems for me.

I have all "Connected..." services disabled. Do you use
bluetooth devices? XBox? If so then you might want to check
whether they work with the service disabled.

In case you don't know, you can also find info by looking
at the dependencies tab in the service's properties
windows. In this case it has nothing depending on it.

There's a site, blackviper.com, that used to have good
help files to figure out services. He seems to have stopped doing
that altogether, having descended into some kind of gaming mania.
I don't know of any other good sources. You just have to do what
you've been doing -- search on the service names.

Bluetooth devices here are for "emergency networking".

I send small files between machines with Bluetooth.
And especially when File Sharing is not working.

But normally, in non-emergency conditions, the Bluetooth nano
transceivers are unplugged. One is on the end of an extension
cable, to place it so it has line-of-sight with its mate.
The extension cable is unplugged at the moment.

I try to avoid showing up in any neighbors "Network Neighborhood".
that's why I have a general policy of radio silence, unless a
radio is temporarily needed. My next door neighbor is a psychopath,
which is why I have the policy.

State of any associated service ? Not modified.

    *******

The Connected Device Platform, has a 200 page spec associated with it.
One user claims it runs while he is online gaming, which hints that
the game uses the protocol for some reason. And the service managed
to chalk up 180GB worth of bandwidth (must have been a long game :-) ).

But this is how you keep software on computers. You create a "mesh" of dependencies, the "bread box" service affects MyPhone and MSTeams
so the bread box service "must keep running". I think you can see
    the attraction of this.

At one time, Apple iTunes for Windows, it contained four or more .msi files.
At that time, the .msi were "independent" of one another. This might
allow you to not install the Bonjour service. Well, that did not last.
Apple determined that people were taking the installer apart and
installing selected bits of it. So, Apple switched to the "mesh model",
such that nothing works, unless all four are installed. You know, the
way the good lord intended. Fuck the users. I only know this, from experimenting with iTunes to help people -- I had no particular
personal interest in the health of iTunes, but people kept having
their own personal issues with it, so I'd download a copy and
play with it a bit. I have a Mac with iTunes on it, and... I
never used iTunes on there either.

With regard to services, the fun begins when the listed
dependencies are wrong, and one of the dependencies is missing.
There is a situation like that with AudioEndpoint that causes
    the speakers to stop working.

I did a repair reinstall a few days ago and have experienced nothing but problems ever since. IMO ever since that guy from India, Satya Nadella
took over as Microsoft's CEO, Windows has gone to shit. He's replaced
most American employees with ones from India, and none of them seem to
know how to code worth a shit.

it's only a matter of time before I have to abandon Windows altogether.

For CDP User Service, you have to use a Registry Editor to disable it.
Find "CDPUserSvc" in Services (NOT the one immediately below it called "CDPUserSvc_XXXXX") and change the value of "Start" to 4.
After a reboot, it should be disabled.

In that case, go through the Registry. Get the service name
from the properties window for the service. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

In this case mine is called CDPUserSvc_42023

So you find that subkey and set Start to 4. If there's a
key without the numbers added, set that the same. I don't
know why they started adding the keys with numbers. I
assume it's some kind of obfuscation trick.

Worst case scenario is that the Registry won't even let you
change the setting! Then you have to right-click the key,
go to advanced security settings, change ownership to
Administrators, then go back and change the setting. You
can feel free to swear while doing it. Fortunately, a lot of
the crap in Win10/11 already has fixes in tweak programs like
Win10 Privacy, Open Shell, WinAero Tweaker, etc.

Yes, it's a pain. I spent two full weeks researching
Win10 sleaze when I first installed it. But you have to choose.
Do you want a computer that does what you tell it to, or do you
want spyware constantly popping up warnings and ads? If you
want the former, getting angry is not going to help. You just have
to do the work to clean it up.

This is not going to get any better. Our new "smart"
washer tries to make me wash the washer periodically,
using an official product called Affresh. Luckily I don't
have a smart frig or smart car, and my cheapo smart
TV only has limited moron-level capacity. I keep it offline,
    so it doesn't cause problems.

The extremely limited descriptions for both the Connected Devices
Platform Service and the Connected Devices Platform User Service
basically say, "This service is used for Connected Devices Platform
scenarios" WTF??? Can't M$ do a better job of providing a description
    than that??

Oh well. A search on the internet provides more on those services:

    https://appuals.com/what-is-the-connected-devices-platform-service-and-should-it-be-disabled/

    https://windowsreport.com/cdpsvc/

    https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/58863-connected-devices-platform-service-what-does-do.html

    https://thegeekpage.com/how-to-disable-connected-devices-platform-service-cdpsvc-to-fix-high-disk-usage/

Do any of you have this service disabled and if so, did disabling it
    cause any problems?

    TIA.

I have CDP Service and CDP User Service disabled, along with many
    others.
I don't use bluetooth devices or Xbox, and it did not cause any problems >>> for me.

How were you able to disable the CDP User Service? On my fully updated
Windows 10 Pro system, that's not allowed. I get the following error
    message (copied and pasted here):

    ---------------------------
    Services
    ---------------------------
    The parameter is incorrect.

    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

For CDP User Service, you have to use a Registry Editor to disable it.
Find "CDPUserSvc" in Services (NOT the one immediately below it called "CDPUserSvc_XXXXX") and change the value of "Start" to 4.
After a reboot, it should be disabled.

    That worked! Many thanks, Allan
