• Spybot user registry hives

From Ed Cryer@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 20 13:56:53 2025
I've suddenly got a message every time I close Spybot; "unloading user
registry hives, this might take time". It takes 10 seconds or so, then
    closes.
    What's this all about?

It copies the registry, and that can take a while. Perhaps they aren't
sure when closing if any registry entries were changed, so they're
saving their copy back, but I would think that would be hazardous.

When you go into regedit.exe, and export the entire registry, that
probably takes a LOT longer. Spybot can do so-called registry "repair"
aka cleanup. That means it would change the registry. In general,
registry cleaners are snakeoil. Is there an option you enabled that has
Spybot attempt registry "repair" without prompting you, or do it
    automatically when loaded?

Spybot is a company name. They have several product. Search & Destroy
is one of them, and perhaps that is what you use. Saying just Spybot is
like saying "Microsoft can't run a macro". Spybot was a pioneer some 20
years ago. They lost their competitive edge quite a while ago. Not
even av-comparatives.org tests it for a long time, especially since it
is NOT an anti-malware program, just spyware detection and some privacy
checks. Some folks keep using it, but only as a second-opinion
on-demand (manually ran) checker. Some reason you keep using it?

They have their own web forums where you might a community more focused
    on that security product.

I run it once a week. I have done for years, together with other malware
and spyware checks. Spybot hasn't had a find for ages, and I was about
    to stop using it.
This message has only recently appeared, and I haven't changed any setting. Maybe there's been a program update.

I suppose it's a good thing that it does unload the user registry hives.
When I google this problem, what show up are posts from people saying
that they are not being unloaded.

Or maybe my registry has swollen to a size that has triggered this thing
    in Spybot.

That "unloading user registry hives" message you're seeing in Spybot is actually a normal system process, though I understand why it might seem concerning if it just started appearing. What's happening is that when Spybot performs its scans, it loads
additional registry hives - these are essentially database files Windows uses to store system and program settings. The message means Spybot is properly cleaning up these temporary loads when closing.

The 10-second delay you're experiencing suggests it's working with some particularly large or complex registry sections. There are a few possible reasons this might have started happening suddenly. A recent Windows update could have changed how registry
handles are managed in the background. Alternatively, Spybot might have updated its threat definitions and is now scanning more aggressively than before. Another possibility is that your user profile's registry hive has grown significantly over time.

You might want to check if there's an update available for Spybot, as newer versions often handle this process more efficiently. Running Windows' built-in maintenance tools like DISM could help clean up any registry bloat. If the message continues to
bother you, reinstalling Spybot typically resets its registry handling behavior to default.

The important thing to know is that this isn't indicating any problem with your system - it's just Spybot being thorough in its cleanup process. However, if the delay starts getting significantly longer, that might suggest some registry fragmentation.

Thanks for the info and reply.
I removed Spybot some time ago. It hadn't found anything for ages, and
    seemed to be redundant here.

Just out of curiosity I re-installed Spybot, ran it, got no hits. Nor
did I get the message about unloading user registry hives.
    All's well that ends well!
