I have a Win10 box that I use only occasionally. Today I booted it and
went straight into Task Manager. Lo and behold!, a program was hogging
CPU, bouncing up to 90+% usage of 16GB. It went on for some time.
Windows Telemetry.
I've switched that off now.
Two options;
1. Service entry,Connected User Experiences and Telemetry
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection
I found that switching off just one left the other on. So I switched
both off.

That sounds to me like a malware infection, Ed. Pretty sure it's not
usual for M$'s telemetry to use that much of your RAM.

It's quite common. Google "Telemetry hogging".

Yep, that was one of the first things I did when I reinstalled W10 and
before I went online.

I suppose you're right. I've heard about such things. Since I've only
had Chrome installed briefly on another computer, I never ran into it.
Of course, there are those who consider W10 itself to be malware. I'm
one of them.
"To block Microsoft EDGE, use the 'Block' button. To unblock it, click
the 'Unblock' button. Once you’ve blocked the browser, it won’t load
even if you –or an app– tries to launch it. We recommend that you change
the default browser first if you have no other browser installed (use
default browser link.) Edge icon on the GUI will show the status of
Microsoft Edge. If it's grayed out, Edge is blocked."

I'm sure I turned off telemetry some years ago. It must be, then, that
OS updates have turned it back on. Probably not as flagrantly and consistently as Edge reinstallation, but quietly done.
MS need Edge welded into Windows. There's a lot built around it. Even if something works for a while, MS will soon be setting sanctions against
it; and probably handing out headaches to those who get clobbered.

Thanks for the suggestion, John, but experience has taught me to decline. This goes for Newyana's recommendation, as well.

I know some people are highly addicted to add-ons and OS-reform-scripts
and other such paraphernalia, but I beware of them. They're future trouble. Just consider how MS has turned on Telemetry again without telling me.
