• Telemetry

From Ed Cryer@21:1/5 to All on Sat Mar 8 17:27:02 2025
I have a Win10 box that I use only occasionally. Today I booted it and
went straight into Task Manager. Lo and behold!, a program was hogging
CPU, bouncing up to 90+% usage of 16GB. It went on for some time.
    Windows Telemetry.

    I've switched that off now.
    Two options;
    1. Service entry,Connected User Experiences and Telemetry
    2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection

I found that switching off just one left the other on. So I switched
    both off.

That sounds to me like a malware infection, Ed. Pretty sure it's not
usual for M$'s telemetry to use that much of your RAM.

I suppose you're right. I've heard about such things. Since I've only

I'm sure I turned off telemetry some years ago. It must be, then, that
OS updates have turned it back on. Probably not as flagrantly and

That makes sense if you think you might eventually want
Edge. The remover I used gives you an option to keep
WebView2, which is basically the Edge browser window for
use in software. I remove that, because I don't expect to
ever want it. But I also block all updates, so MS won't be
    messing with my system.

MS do say you can't use Copilot without Edge. Which sounds
to me a bit like saying that I can't have syphyllis unless I
also take gonorhea, but to each their own.

In my admittedly limited experience I've found that tweaking
tends to cause problems with Windows Update on 10/11. So
it's probably best to go with one extreme or the other: Either
lock out MS and clean up the mess, or let them control your
system and don't fool around with tweaking. When I first installed
Win10 I couldn't even get it to activate. I had to start all over
    again and activate before tweaking.

Thanks for the suggestion, John, but experience has taught me to decline. This goes for Newyana's recommendation, as well.

MS need Edge welded into Windows. There's a lot built around it. Even if something works for a while, MS will soon be setting sanctions against
it; and probably handing out headaches to those who get clobbered.

Exactly. And what's to worry about? When not in use, but with default settings such as 'Start-up boost, Edge uses 64MB and no CPU/Disk/Network. Nothing to worry about on a somewhat decent machine.

I know some people are highly addicted to add-ons and OS-reform-scripts
and other such paraphernalia, but I beware of them. They're future trouble. Just consider how MS has turned on Telemetry again without telling me.

Reading the 'Description:' [1] of the 'Connected User Experiences and Telemetry' Service, the *Telemetry* part does exactly what is set in the 'Diagnostics & feedback' part of Settings, i.e. 'Sending required data'.

What the 'Connected User Experiences' part of the service does, is unclear/vague to me. AFAICT, it only applies to particular apps, not to
    Windows as a whole.

As said before, you can enable 'View diagnostic data' to see what
    telemetry is collected.

All-in-all, I think it's much ado about nothing.

    [1]
"The Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service enables features
that support in-application and connected user experiences.
Additionally, this service manages the event driven collection and
transmission of diagnostic and usage information (used to improve the
experience and quality of the Windows Platform) when the diagnostics
and usage privacy option settings are enabled under Feedback and
    Diagnostics."
