I would prefer to exclude .lnk files. When I "run" a file (e. g. am mp3) from everything's search results (or almost anywhere else, such as File Manager), a .lnk appears in my Recent - fair enough, but of course it also matches the search criteria that
found it, so the everything window shows it too.

I've looked through its menus, but the most hopeful looking one - Tools | Options | Indexes | Exclude - didn't work.

Yes, I get those a lot too.

If you get impatient, see the end.

I've never seen a program with more options. Hard to believe he didn't
include that, but I can't find it either.

I'm sure you know, but just in case and for others, you can search for
any combinations of parts of the file name. Even if you can't remember
    the whole name.
So instead of fxsound that includes fxsound.lnk, how about
    fx exe
It wouldn't remember that, of course.

Maybe if you sort by path, all the lnk's will be grouped together.

I've looked through its menus, but the most hopeful looking one - Tools
    | Options | Indexes | Exclude - didn't work.

Are you sure? I put in the exclude box *.lnk and I think it worked.

Thank you. I have downloaded and unzipped the file. I then added a
shortcut to it in my Start folder.

Today, too many applications only have Web-based documentation. This is especially bad with anti-virus applications. If I suspect I have a
virus, this first thing I do is disable my Internet connection so that I
do not spread it. With only Web-based documentation, I am then cut off
from vital information on dealing with the virus.

    Followup-To set to alt.windows7.general.

It does. I'd left out the * (since the search function works without
them, I assumed - wrongly - that the exclude function would too).

Paul's answer will work _every_ time.
If you want a less drastic, one-time exclusion, just add to your query "!.lnk"
