  • Change of local address messes up sent mail display

    I have had to change my local return address. Unfortunately, this
    completely messes up the sent-mail display, in that it now simply
    displays my name instead of the destination in the sent mail. This is of
    course useless, since I know I sent the mail-- I want to see who the
    reply was sent to.
    Now one way I can fix this is the edit all of the sent-mail files and
    change all of the From: lines from my old return adress to my new one.
    That is however a pain, and potentially dangerous.
    Apparently alpine looks at the return address (From:) in the mail and if it is the same as the current return address, it displays the To: address in
    display, but if the From: is not the same as the current return address,
    it displays the From: address.
    Is there any way I can tell pine to always display the To: address in
    a sent-mail file. (I have saved sent-mail files from before 2000 which I
    want to save.)

    I think a long time ago I had a similar problem. You can try to enter
    your former local return address as "Alternate Addresses" in the setup.

    That should work. From the "help" on this configuration option:

    In the default INDEX display the personal name (or email address)
    of the person listed in the message's "From:" header field is
    usually displayed except when that address is yours or one of your
    alternate addresses. In that case you will usually see the name
    of the first person specified in the message's "To:" header field
    with the prefix "To: " prepended.

    Thanks. Yes I found alt-addresses in the .pinerc file, and when I put in
    a comma separated list of the old return addresses, all of the sent-file entries listed themselves according to the To: line rather than the
    From: line, which (the To: line listing) is of course what I want.
