    The little railways of Wales.
Law passed saying new railways must be "standard gauge".
    Unless...
The "unless" for these - too hilly, too winding, way to small,
essentially single-purpose - mainly bring slate to the coast or main
    railway.
As a kid, had this crazy interest in these.

Ireland had a big amount of 3foot gauge railways.
    Winding around lightly populated areas.

Although we didn't have Beeching cuts, loss of riders to their autos had the same effect. https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-why-so-expensive-america-train-system-2019-3

Distance matters. New England is only a small corner of the US. https://mapfight.xyz/map/great.britain/#new.england

There is a former logging Shay here in standard gauge. https://www.shaylocomotives.com/data/factsheet/sn-3066.htm

What was the reason for narrowing the gauge? Did it really decrease
    allowable turning radius?
