• Tip the mailman?

From Bob Roberts@316:36/39 to All on Mon Dec 7 15:30:34 2020
    So,

Wondering if the people here "tip" their US Mailman around Christmas, and if so what you provide? My wife always wants to give quite generous gifts to the mailman, and I'm kinda of the opinion that they are just doing their job.

This year at her instruction, we gave our mailman a box of Godiva chocholates and an Amazon Gift Card. I've read that they are not allowed to take cash, but can take non-cash gifts....

If we had a regular UPS Man I might consider tipping them. But where I live it seems like we have a new UPS driver every few weeks, sometimes multiple trucks in the same day. So I don't even know who our regular guy is.

Chocolates sound like a good idea. You're right. Government employees cannot accept cash gifts or anything that can be used like cash, like a prepaid visa card.

Your gift needs to be less than $20 in value per occasion and no more than $50 per year.

It does say, however, per customer not per household.

Keep in mind your mail person works 6 days a week, it doesn't matter if it's 100F out or -10F - they will be out delivering your mail.

Best thing for them is to leave out snacks and cold water during the summer
and maybe an urn of hot coffee in the winter.

I've seen some of those snack tables people leave out on Reddit. Quite fancy.

It was that way for me as well. Plus, you never know when the mail is
going to arrive. Some days, it gets here before lunch...and other days,
    it's well after dark.

It reminds me of the joke of the carrier pigeons, and one shows up very
late. When asked by his trainer what the problem was, the bird replied "It
was such a nice day, that I decided to walk". <G>

It seems the mail gets funky around the holidays each year. Regular carriers take their vacation days and the B-team takes over which isn't familar with the routes or addresses and everything gets wacky. Add to that the increased volume from holiday shipments, winter weather, and .....

I've always been impressed that the mail works as well as it does. For the most part it shows up.

:-) Netmail is a bit like a carrier pigeon. Sometimes you send a message and never know if it made it all the way.

I wonder how many sysops have done the "I'm sending you this email because I'm not sure if you'll get my netmail" thing :)

This time of year, the place is cramped like sardines. I had a parcel
to pick up (an order from Dr. Leonard's Catalog), but had to stand in line...thankfully, I had my walker with me.

For the most part...we won't talk about the least part. :P

Unless your BBS software has a return receipt with it.
