Yusheng Wang, 35, an employee of Canada’s largest electricity producer Hydro-Quebec, was arrested at his home south of Montreal by the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Monday.

A special national-security investigations unit of the RCMP charged Wang
with stealing trade secrets for China.

Wang was also charged with unauthorized use of computer systems, fraud,
and breach of public trust. He will be the first person prosecuted for
the long-dormant “economic espionage” charge established under the
Security of Information Act in 2001.

“This investigation is of great importance for us and sends a clear
message. It demonstrates our commitment and that of our partners to work
with at-risk sectors,” RCMP Inspector David Beaudoin said at a press conference on Monday.

“Foreign actor interference is a priority for many law enforcement and intelligence agencies around the world. Hydro-Quebec is considered a
critical infrastructure and a strategic interest to be protected,” the
RCMP said in a press release announcing the arrest.

According to Hydro-Quebec’s statement on the matter, Wang was a
researcher working on battery materials for the Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES). The CETEES
unit has research partnerships with several private companies, and also
works with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.

Just exactly what was he charged for? Trade secrets? I thought electric companies made electricity, a process that has not changed much in a
hundred years. There is something fishy about this story. Maybe it had
to do with battery research? Can we look forward for some new advance in battery technology coming from this Canadian electric company?

The usual, he is charged with industrial espionage. He had a job in

He was dumb enough to file patents in his own name for research owned by Hydro-Québec. Corporate security caught him in the act and they went to

When you're an employee, the results of your research belong to your >employER.

It will depend on the employment contract. Most will state any
and all results become the intellectual property of the employer. But sometimes, it can remain that of the employee.

Any attempt you make to use those results in any way
disagreeable to your employER is illegal and/or a civil matter for
which your are liable to be prosecuted.

I'm not sure about criminal law. But definitely civil law. Breach
of contract would be a gimme in such a case. And if the employer is
smart, and having such a contract suggest it is, there will be set
    penalties listed in the contract.

Yusheng Wang, 35, an employee of Canada’s largest electricity
producer Hydro-Quebec, was arrested at his home south of Montreal
by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Monday.

A special national-security investigations unit of the RCMP charged
Wang with stealing trade secrets for China.

Wang was also charged with unauthorized use of computer systems,
fraud, and breach of public trust. He will be the first person
prosecuted for the long-dormant “economic espionage” charge
established under the Security of Information Act in 2001.

According to Hydro-Quebec’s statement on the matter, Wang was a
researcher working on battery materials for the Center of

(CETEES). The CETEES unit has research partnerships with several

Just exactly what was he charged for? Trade secrets? I thought
electric companies made electricity, a process that has not changed
much in a hundred years. There is something fishy about this story.
Maybe it had to do with battery research? Can we look forward for
some new advance in battery technology coming from this Canadian
    electric company?

The usual, he is charged with industrial espionage. He had a job in
battery development and he transmitted classified information to
China. He was dumb enough to file patents in his own name for
research owned by Hydro-Québec. Corporate security caught him in the
act and they went to the police.

So far there is every indication that this will go before a «regular» criminal court. Also the culprit is detained presently to curb his
