• "Downloads" is specified in "Save files to" field but...

From Adam@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 29 08:51:52 2022
My downloads have been going to /tmp/<folder_name> this month.

    Any ideas why ?

    Firefox

about:config # in the URL bar, or where ever the URL bar hides
    this week

    browser.download.dir

    Thanks, Guru Paul !!

    "Boolean" is selected

which doesn't seem right and not sure how this was selected.
Things used to work as expected until June 2022.

Problem started happening when I downloaded a FAX (TIFF) from eFax.com.

Did a script change settings on my system ?

You could also check this item, and because it uses
numeric codes, you need a reference to program it.

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries#Browser.

    browser.download.folderList 0: the desktop
    1 (default): the downloads folder
    2: the last folder specified
    for a download

    "1" is specified

    "2" is specified now.

It is the 2 choice, while giving freedom in download
file dialog, also tends to run things off the rails if
you're not aware of it. Mine is set to 2 right now,
which is a non-default setting, but I could not
tell you how it got that way. Using the file dialog might
    be sufficient to flip it.

"If this was a public transit bus, none of the
riders on the bus are quite sure who is driving the bus"

The browser config details resemble this situation.

Do NOT erase any lines of info in about:config, as the
    interface has no Undo command.

    Just inspecting at the moment.

What kind of browser experience is it, that turns
    every operation into an adventure ? :-/ I don't
recollect "things flapping in the breeze" quite like
this in the old days. You got a new browser. You set the
damn Downloads directory. You never looked at the setting again.
Same as changing the home URL to "about:blank" or "about:plugins"
so there were no pictures of Hamburgers or Grinder Chicks and
exhortations to participate in poorly named exotic features.
