• Second bad Ubuntu 20.04.3 install in 2 days.

From bilsch01@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jan 13 12:29:38 2022
I moved from Ubu 20.04.1 to 20.04.3. I installed 20.04.3 twice in the
    last two days
using a different iso file each time.
First time the bundled Firefox AND Thunderbird had SERIOUS problems.
    They would not work.
Then I got a different 20.04.3 iso and installed it and, at first,
    everything worked
fine, but after a day the FireFox could not go to any address or link.
    Totally useless.

One reason I use Ubu is I completely reinstall the OS from time to time
    because I
get paranoid about virus/malware infection. Not a big deal. It takes
    about 1.5 hours. It
is easy to do with Ubu - maybe other Linuxes too I don't know. Another
    reason I use Ubu
is I REALLY like the program RythmBox, which has no Windows version. I
    have two questions.

QUESTION #1: Forget 20.04.3. I want to go back to 20.04.1 but I copied
    over that iso.
Where can I download an iso for 20.04.1?

QUESTION #2: what is happening to Ubuntu? I always have Windows but dual
    boot Ubu
which I been using happily for over 10 years. I mostly only use Ubu.
    This recent
experience with 20.04.3 is very discouraging. Ubu was quite popular at
    one time and
desktop Linux was on the rise it seemed. But I sense interest has fallen
    off. Also
everything is free and most people don't donate money so apparently
    quality has fallen
off. Is there any hope for Ubuntu in the future?

    TIA Bill S.

I doubt there is any hope for Ubuntu, it has just got worse.

Have you tried MX Linux? It has Rhythm Box, in its repository. It also
has Waterfox, which I use instead of Firefox. Never had any trouble
    with it loading websites.

I like KDE Neon; I like Linux Mint; both based on Ub but not Gnome.

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is
that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy
boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all
applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input
instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any
USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy
disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive
    required at all. \----------------------------------------------------------------------

With 20.04 the default install is the snap version,(slow as molasses and
POS). Can confirm if you have the snap version with command "snap list"

if you see firefox then remove with

    sudo snap remove firefox

    then install the apt version

    sudo apt install firefox

I have no issue with the apt installed version

    apt-cache policy firefox

Puppy has a nice strategy for its persistence. It can also save its persistence file to such as a Win installed hdd w/o bothering the Win.

What you say seems unusual to me, but interestingly my Firefox has
started working fine with no intervention from me. As though the problem
    is external to my PC.

My Thunderbird was not truely broken but very annoying,
It downloaded old mail about the time we were seeing in the
    Usenet downloads of old posts.

But that went away in a day. Weirdly enough the duplicate
messages could not be removed for some reason by the Thunderbird.

I still have to go and chase down about 100 duplicate messages
but those are problems I have dealt with before. So Canonical needs
to be more careful as to what it is sending its users.

A bad FF program in the iso,

The pkglist for Ub 20.04.3 says Ffx 91.0; that list for 20.04.2 says 85.0.

I don't think your 20.04.3 was subjected to the snap transition problem,

Now I think that is more likely wrong.

    The Ub 20.04 software center enables the whole snap business by default;
that is what made Mint unhappy.

the decision to change the Software Center to install snap-based applications is controversial.

The snapcraft system has Ffx latest stable 96.0.1

but has differences in areas that make me happier.  I haven't been a
Gnome fan for years, but I continue to 'check it out' by booting a live
to see where it is going; but it hasn't made me any happier for a long
    time.

I like KDE Neon; I like Linux Mint; both based on Ub but not Gnome.

Do you typically boot the live and twiddle around w/ using it before you install?  I always do that to see if anything unexpected pops up.

QUESTION #1: Forget 20.04.3. I want to go back to 20.04.1 but I copied
    over that iso.
Where can I download an iso for 20.04.1?

    http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/20.04.1/

QUESTION #2: what is happening to Ubuntu? I always have Windows but
dual boot Ubu which I been using happily for over 10 years. I mostly
only use Ubu. This recent experience with 20.04.3 is very
discouraging. Ubu was quite popular at one time and desktop Linux was
on the rise it seemed. But I sense interest has fallen off. Also
everything is free and most people don't donate money so apparently
quality has fallen off. Is there any hope for Ubuntu in the future?

I think Ub dev is going OK.

My personal tastes are more along the lines of Mint which uses Ub repo/s
but has differences in areas that make me happier.  I haven't been a

Thanks for the link to the ISO file
