Then you have to maintain the domain name through your registrar
(whether or not you choose to keep www.thatdomain.tld available).

Your existing email solution will then continue to work.

Note that as soon as you let the registration lapse, emails to you@thatdomain.tld will cease to function.

I currently have website that I no longer need but I do want to keep
the email addresses hosted along with it.

    1) Can someone recommend an inexpensive email hosting site for a light user?
    2) Can I transfer my existing email addresses to it?

    Thanks in advance.

I have no experience to base 'recommend' but an article:

7 Best Cheap Email Hosting Providers (One Is Free!) says zoho has a free
    that might work.

I found X10 web hosting. They have a free account available, limited storage for web page. Has ftp access if you wish
to just push web page changes you edit on your local machine (as I do). They also supply limited email.
Down side of free account is you have to visit and login to your account once ever 28 days or so. I put a recurring
event in my calendar for 23 days.

I have about 500K web page, don't use the email (though I tested it once).

I'm aware you said you don't need the web but....

I have a couple of domains registered with Low Cost Names

They a UK based ISP and can be found at www.lcn.com

If I keep the domains registered there, I get a few mailboxes for no
extra charge. They also allow a limited number of redirects

I have moved my small number of domains to 20i to use their free hosting which includes email. Very pleased with it. https://www.20i.com/web-hosting/free-hosting

    - oh and the transfer of email accounts was automated and simple. Put in
the passwords and the data was transferred.

If you transfer your domain to 123 reg, they offer a lightweight hosting service or a free redirection service.

You most certainly can transfer a domain, if you own it
