Such trust is rather LOW these days - NOT good.
All the Wanda's with arm-fulls of mystery ballots,
boxes of ballots magically showing-up days/weeks
after, counters who don't want to be watched ...
sorry, too many ways to cheat these days even at
the highest levels.
When the USA was young, growing, strong, we could
kinda shrug-off a little cheating ... but the whole
tone of things is different now.

We are one of the few countries that do not have voter checks and balances
in place.
When I go to vote, all they do is ask my address, look it up on a tablet and have me sign it.
Last year I purposely misspelled my name, and borked my signature and not a peep
from the election people.
That is just wrong.
I need a freaking ID to buy cold syrup.
They just made it TOO damned easy to cheat ... and
with a clear partisan TILT to it all.
My state, they DO want to see an official gold-star
ID of some kind. These days relatively cheap 'AI' could
instantly analyze a signature against known instances
and come up with a go/no-go figure - also check the
face -vs- the alleged ID. Now since medical conditions
and certain prescriptions CAN make sigs go shakey, the
option for a "provisional" - "let us check it out better
tomorrow" - ballot should be offered.
The Wanda's kinda ruined it for drop-box balloting
fer-sure. No more of that. Either officially mail
a ballot or SHOW UP at a polling place. The old 50s
lefty excuse about illiterate 'black' people never
having good ID is just BULLSHIT these days. Everyone
is heavily documented in several systems. If no ID it
likely means you're HIDING something. Fine, sort of,
but don't try to vote.
I'd LIKE an 'Honesty'-dependent country, but that's
just NOT gonna work these days (if ever). Seems just
a Human Nature thing ... if there's a System then
people immediately try to game it. 'Systems' are
abstract, not like lying to your neighbor or buds.
Do all these checks make voting less 'secret' ? Yep,
unfortunately. Still, better that then a wide open
cheatFest nobody will believe afterwards. Those
'enlightned' leftysocialist EU countries our libs
always dote on, NONE of them are as lax as the USA
when it comes to voting.
SOME of the 'secret' can be re-captured by checking
the IDs, but, all good, handing an anonymous ballot
(and they SHOULD be watermarked paper IMHO) to the
voter afterwards. You just don't GET that ballot
until ...
