Liberal Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan on Wednesday denied an emergency appeal to stop the deportations of four Mexican migrants who claimed they
would be targeted by cartels if they returned.
The four filers, all family members, were ordered to report to immigration officials on Thursday for deportation, but attempted to get it delayed so
they could file a petition for formal review, according to Fox News.
Kagan, who oversees appeals from the Ninth Circuit, did not comment on her decision or refer the matter to the full court.
Attorneys for the filers claimed that their clients, who are in the U.S. illegally, all face threats of violence by the cartels if they are not
allowed to remain in the country. Other family members in Mexico were
allegedly beaten and threatened by a cartel after they refused to
cooperate.
"Petitioners face imminent removal and have been directed to report to immigration office on 4/17/2025," the attorneys wrote. "[This is] despite credible and detailed testimony and documentary evidence showing they are targets of cartel violence due to their family ties and refusal to comply
with extortion demands."
It is not clear if the family had been deported at the time of publishing.
