Take on drive on the freeways of California, especially those in the metro areas.

Google: the worst roads in the usa
AI Overview:
Several states consistently rank low for road quality in the US.
New Mexico, South Carolina, and Mississippi frequently appear on
lists of states with the worst roads, often due to high fatality
rates and significant shares of roads in poor condition. Other
states like Louisiana, Oklahoma, and West Virginia also struggle
with road quality. Rhode Island, New Jersey, Hawaii, California,
and Connecticut also have a significant share of their roads
rated as poor.
Not to mention gravel roads in red state bumfsck territory, not so
great for bikes. Get that road grader workin'! (I remember as a kid
in rural Illinois shooting at the road grader with a BB gun. The guy
thought it was wasps.)
Having experienced the volume of traffic in L.A., no wonder the roads
suffer from wear & tear.
Not to mention incompetent repairs. When the 210 developed a lot of
potholes after last year's rainstorms they were hurriedly
PARTIALLY-filled with blacktop. Most of these potholes were to the
left of the seam between the slow lane and the next-to-slow (sorry, I
can never remember which is the #1 lane) lane. The worst ones were
repaired with full-lane concrete, but there are still a number of
defective blacktop repairs.
The fact that most of these potholes (not round, just jagged chunks of concrete dropped below the surface where leakage clearly carried away underlying dirt) occur in similar locations might seen to indicate
that the contractor did a slipshod/criminal job.
And don't get me started about the City sidewalks...

A good road can handle a lot of traffic with little wear. The problem
with CA roads is the rush to get it done.
I've lived 1/4 mile away since before it was built. No idea if there
was any hurry, but this section is built on piled up dirt. Presumably
some level of compression would have been specified. There is definite >erosion where the freeway passes over the road -- you can see the
concrete tiles bulging out where the dirt is settling, and water leaks
out between the tiles. Presumably there are concrete supports somewhere
in there, but I have no proof.
