Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar on Tuesday moved to force a House
vote on his articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Thanedar took to the House floor on Tuesday afternoon to notice his seven articles of impeachment as privileged.
That means House Republican leaders have two legislative days to bring up
the resolution. They are most likely to introduce a motion to table the resolution, which would effectively kill it.
Newsweek has contacted Thanedar's office for comment via email outside
regular business hours.
Why It Matters
Thanedar introduced the articles of impeachment, which accuse Trump of
offenses including obstruction of justice, bribery and corruption, and tyrannical overreach, last month.
However, few Democrats have voiced support for impeaching Trump since he returned to office in January since measures are unlikely to go anywhere
with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate. Trump was
impeached twice during his first term in office, but was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.
What To Know
On the House floor, Thanedar accused Trump of "committing crimes since Day One."
"Bribery, corruption, taking power from Congress, creating an unlawful
office in DOGE, violating First Amendment rights, ignoring due process and finally, refusing to abide by a unanimous Supreme Court ruling," he said.
"Just as I stand here in the House of Representatives Mr. Trump is
traveling to the Middle East to accept a gift worth $400 million from a
foreign government."
He added: "I'm not concerned about whether this is the right time or if
there are enough votes from my colleagues across the aisle. I rise today
to do my duty and uphold my oath to protect the Constitution."
Thanedar's move angered House Democrats, with several telling Axios they believe his effort is aimed at securing support for himself as he faces
primary challenges in his Detroit-area Congressional district.
What People Are Saying
Thanedar wrote on X on Tuesday: "It's time for us to take action. I call
on my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to support my Articles of Impeachment, stand up for this country, defend their oath, and protect the American people. It's never the wrong time to stand up for our
Constitution."
Illinois Representative Brad Schneider, the chair of the New Democrat Coalition, told Axios: "We need to focus on reconciliation. 100 percent of
our energy is on dealing with this."
Trump railed against efforts to impeach him in a post on Truth Social
earlier in May, writing: "The Democrats are really out of control. They
have lost everything, especially their minds! These Radical Left Lunatics
are into the 'Impeachment thing' again. They have already got two 'No
Name,' little respected Congressmen, total Whackjobs both, throwing the 'Impeachment; of DONALD J. TRUMP around, for about the 20th time, even
though they have no idea for what I would be Impeached."
What's Next
House leaders have until Thursday to bring up Thanedar's resolution.
Members could debate it, vote to send it to committee or vote to table the resolution.
His measure is unlikely to advance since Republicans control both chambers
of Congress.
