    Converting a Qatari-owned 747 jet
into a new Air Force One for
    President Donald Trump would involve
    installing multiple top-secret
systems, cost over $1 billion and
take years to complete, three aviation
    experts told NBC News.

They said that accepting the 13-year-
old jet would likely cost U.S.
    taxpayers hundreds of millions of
    dollars over time, noting that
    refurbishing the commercial plane
would exceed its current value of
$400 million. The project might also
not be completed by the end of Trump’s
term in 2029, at which time the plane
is expected to be handed over to
    Trump’s presidential library foundation.

    Richard Aboulafia, an analyst and
    consultant on commercial and military
aviation, said he thought turning the
Qatari jetliner into Air Force One
would cost billions and take years.

    “You’re taking a 747, disassembling
it, reassembling it, and then jacking
it up to a very high level,” said
    Aboulafia, a managing director at
    AeroDynamic Advisory, a consulting
    firm.

    “Since you’re also disassembling and
    reassembling the jet for security
reasons, you’re probably going to go
with the people who know it better,”
Aboulafia said. “If you have to rip
the plane apart, that’s more of a
    Boeing job.”

Somebody's going to shoot it out of the sky. Trump better stay away.

OK they're going to spend a billion to retrofit the flying palace, plus
keep the order for two new AF1's costing a billion, then give the
    flying palace away?

Why would it be donated to Trump's library when he never had a chance
to fly in it while president?

The only thing it's preserving for posterity is the decadence and greed
    of this man.

BTW, will this waste and abuse be reported by DOGE?

He'll fly in it after being President.

Of course he will (if he's still alive) but presidential libraries are
supposed to be about what's going on during a presidency, not after it.
It's been estimated this plane might not be ready until 2029 and by
then what's the point of all the extra security built into it.

I get your point and I fully agree, but to be pedantic, when the
President is not flying, we have zero Air Force One aircraft. It only
becomes AF1 when the President is aboard. That exact same aircraft would
be designated AF2 if it was carrying the Vice President without the
President. When they disembark, the designation is lost.

release. By 2025 the delivery date had slipped to 2029 and the Air Force
was considering changes to the requirements to bring the delivery date
    back to 2027."

So, if you go back to when Transaero originally ordered the 747-8s in
2011, it's been a while. Transaero went bankrupt in 2015 before taking delivery, so the two planes weren't exactly pre-owned when the Air Force
    bought them in 2017.

$2 billion over budget and delivery maybe sometime in this decade, I
wonder about the wisdom of giving Boeing the F-47 contract. Rewarding
failure? That's the real story, not a used jet from Qatar.

Why can't MAGAs be satisfied with that?

They prefer to destroy the USA and be laughed at.
