PORTLAND, Oregon — Cell phone video shows the moment a man drove his car
into a crowd of protesters Wednesday evening outside Portland's ICE
facility.

"I was in shock, to be honest," said Nik, an ICE protester who took video
of the car before it ran into him.

For safety reasons, Nik asked KGW not to show his face or use his last
name.

"If I wouldn't have been in body armor, (the car) would have crushed my
ribs and stuff," said Nik. "Every other day somebody's showing up with a
gun; somebody's trying to drive through the crowd."

Nik said the incident began when the driver of the car confronted
protesters for blocking the way to his home.

"He lives there so it was like, my bad," said Nik. "I get that this is
probably frustrating, so we let him go to his apartment."

About five minutes later, Nik said the man returned to the crowd in his
car and was more aggressive than before.

"He (drove) up to us and told us that we weren't letting him leave despite nobody standing in front of him or anything," said Nik. "Then when we
shouted that he had a kid in the car, that is what triggered his
frustration."

The video then shows the driver swearing at the crowd of people before
putting his car in reverse and backing into them. Nik said he didn't fall
after the impact, but bounced off the car, inadvertently knocking a fellow
ICE protester to the ground. He said the man skinned his palms on the
asphalt but is okay.

By Friday evening, Nik said he had not yet filed a police report but
planned to. He said he doesn't want anyone to harm the man who drove into
the crowd.

"Retribution isn't going to help anything; I just want people to avoid
him," said Nik. "Our focus is strictly on letting ICE know that they are
not welcome in our city."

Nik also said he wants people to see the other perspective of what's
happening amid ICE protests across the country.

"We're being called terrorists by the Department of Homeland Security, and we're being dehumanized in a way that makes it OK for people to come do
what that guy did," said Nik.

KGW reached out to the Portland Police Bureau about the incident. A spokesperson said they take incidents like this seriously and encouraged
anyone who witnessed what happened, has additional video or can help
identify those involved to let them know.
