    Perhaps it was a mistake to fight the Civil War? There's not one word
    in The Constitution that precludes a state from seceding. Maybe what
    would have been the residual United States, the "northern states", would
    have benefited since 1861 by not fighting that war than how it has
    turned out. You can't turn back the clock, but I often wonder. And,
    with respect to the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, a residual U.S.
    could have passed and ratified those Amendments without the need to
    fight and defeat the south. It certainly would be a different U.S.
    without George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and all the
    other Presidents who lived in states below the Mason-Dickson line.
