A British national living in Miami Beach has been arrested for illegally
voting six times in U.S. elections while falsely claiming American
citizenship, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement
    (FDLE).

James Ross Wightman, 65, faces multiple charges after authorities
discovered he had been voting in local and national elections despite
being previously deported from the United States in 1989.

Newsweek reached out to the FDLE via email on Sunday for comment.

    The Context
This case highlights ongoing concerns about election integrity and the verification systems used to prevent unauthorized voting.

In October of 2024, Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger
revealed the results of a citizenship audit of the state's voter rolls,
which showed that out of 8.2 million registered voters, only 20
individuals were found to be non-U.S. citizens.

Raffensperger said all 20 registrations were canceled, and the cases had
been forwarded to local prosecutors to determine if criminal charges were appropriate.

However, nine had participated in previous elections, while the remaining
11 showed no record of voting at all.

    What To Know
According to the FDLE, Wightman was voluntarily deported from the United
States in September 1989 after overstaying his visitor visa and facing
    drug charges in Hawaii.

He returned to the United States in November 2000 and submitted a voter registration application with a false claim of U.S. citizenship.

In November 2013, authorities say Wightman presented a fraudulent Ohio
birth certificate to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to renew his Florida driver's license. The Ohio Department of
Health has confirmed that no such birth certificate exists.

Between 2022 and 2024, Wightman participated in six local and national elections while registered with no party affiliation since 2013.

    What People Are Saying
Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Miami-Dade County State Attorney said in a statement: "Voting is a civic duty for every American citizen. James
Wightman knew that he was not an American citizen having previously left
for the United Kingdom when facing deportation."

    What Happens Next
Wightman is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional
Center, with no attorney information available on the county clerk's
    website.

The case was investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Election Crime Unit, working in conjunction with the Florida Department of State Office of Election Crimes and Security, U.S. Department of State,
and Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Office.

The Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections Office, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, and Miami Beach Police Department also assisted in the arrest.

Nope, because a larger number of invalid votes can be accommodated by
the voting system without there being any change in election outcomes.

20 is already statistically insignificant, but if you really want to
make the residual even more insignificant, you'd better be actively

Hey city boy-- you never read a news story about a local race being decided by a
    coin flip?

Sure, that does happen ... but in tiny local races.

For a recent example, the Pasadena City Council seat's tie was with just
272 votes each: with such small samples, there's a ~0.2% probability of
a tie occurring purely by --> random chance <--

So over the past 50 years, what's the highest office thus selected?

FWIW, also don't forget that any "coin flip" decision is due to "States
Rights" principle which chose to allow elections to be determined in
this fashion instead of holding a new election.

FYI, for the question of if a tie **ever** happened in a race for a
Federal office, here's a list of the closest races:

    1) 2017; 1 vote margin (VA State house..not Federal)
    2) 1910; 1 vote margin (NY HoR)
    3) 1910 - UK 1 vote margin (not USA)
    4) 1839; 1 vote margin (MA Governor..not Federal))
    5) 2008 - India 1 vote margin (not USA)
    6) 1994; tie (WY State house...not Federal)
    7) 1961 - Zanzibar (not USA)
    8) 2013 - Philippines tie (Mayoral; not USA)
    9) 2013 - Carinthia (not USA)
    10) 1994 & 2003 - Quebec (not USA)
    11) 2002 & 2011; Nevada tie (local councils...not Federal)

    <https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/59873/10-elections-decided-one-vote-or-less>

TL;DR: per the above, over the ~250 year history of the USA, there's
been zero (0) Federal elections which resulted in a tie, and only one
which had a one (1) vote margin. Beyond this, there also was a tie at
the 1800 Electoral College (Thomas Jefferson eventually selected), which
can be attributed to small voting numbers again, since at the time the
College had only 138 electors (0.7% random chance of a tie), whereas
today its 538 (0.002% random chance of a tie).
