TRUMP PLEDGES UNCONSTITUTIONAL ORDER
TO LIMIT MAIL-IN VOTING AFTER PUTIN
CHAT
Aug 18
President Donald Trump pledged
Monday that he will try to eliminate
mail-in voting, after telling Fox
News that authoritarian Russian
President Vladimir Putin agreed with
him on the subject during their
meeting last week.
Despite lacking any sort of
constitutional power on the matter,
Trump declared in a Truth Social
post that he would sign an executive
order to “help bring HONESTY to the
2026 Midterm Elections,” and attempt
to strip states of their independent
authority to oversee elections, and
is demanding they just do what he
tells them to.
“I am going to lead a movement to
get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also,
while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’
Very Expensive, and Seriously
Controversial VOTING MACHINES,” the
president wrote, referencing
conservatives’ disproven claims and
conspiracies regarding voter fraud
in the 2020 election, which he lost.
“Remember, the States are merely an
‘agent’ for the Federal Government in
counting and tabulating the votes.
They must do what the Federal
Government, as represented by the
President of the United States, tells
them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to
do,” he added. “ELECTIONS CAN NEVER
BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING…
THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX, USING VOTING
MACHINES THAT ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL
DISASTER, MUST END, NOW!!!”
Of course, the president does not
have the power to unilaterally strip
states of their constitutionally
guaranteed right to conduct and
oversee elections, and any executive
order purporting to do so will likely
face immediate court challenges.
The post came days after Trump told F
ox News’ Sean Hannity that Putin — who
hasn’t participated in a free and fair
election in decades — agreed with him
on the need to eliminate mail-in
voting during their meeting last week.
“Vladimir Putin said something — one
of the most interesting things — he
said, ‘your election was rigged
because you have mail-in voting,’”
Trump recounted. “He said … ‘it’s
impossible to have mail-in voting and
have honest elections.”
“We talked about 2020,” Trump continued.
“He said ‘You won that election by so
much,’ … and he said and ‘if you would
have won, we wouldn’t have had a war,
you’d have all these millions of people
alive now instead of dead,’ and he said
‘you lost it because of mail-in voting,
it was a rigged election.’”
There is no evidence that the use of
mail-in ballots or digital voting
machines is conducive to widespread
electoral fraud. Though mail-in
voting has historically skewed
Democratic, Republicans rely on it
as well, including in states like
Florida, where Trump voted early
last year. Nevertheless, eliminating
mail-in voting has been a goal of
the president’s for some time now. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-pledges-limit-mail-in-voting-putin-1235410408/

The all-mail elections underway across Arizona
for school district bond and override issues,
which raised concerns among several Republican
political figures this week, have been
permitted by state law for 30 years.
State law permits special districts to conduct
mail-only elections with the permission of
their county board of supervisors. The law
applies to school districts and various
other special taxing districts, including
those created to fund fire departments, water
infrastructure, pest control, flood control,
transportation infrastructure, stadiums,
hospitals and numerous other issues.

... it will be the first statewide
vote-by-mail election. That’s no major hurdle
for those in Anchorage or other municipalities
that have already switched to mail-in ballots
for local elections, but the vast majority of
Alaska communities haven’t conducted a
completely mail-in election before, so many
residents who are unfamiliar with the process
will need assistance with how it works. For
its own part, the Division of Elections should
make sure it’s prepared so that the mail-in
system runs smoothly and maintains Alaskans’
trust. Elections in Alaska and across the
country have already established that voting
by mail is safe, easy and
secure — let’s keep that record up.

The U.S. state of Oregon established vote-by-mail
as the standard mechanism for voting with Ballot
Measure 60, a citizen's initiative, in 1998. The
measure made Oregon the first state in the United
States to conduct its elections exclusively by mail.
The measure passed on November 3, 1998, by a margin
of 69.4% to 30.6%.

Kari Lake, Who Demanded Mail-in Voting Be
Banned, Now Urges People Use It
July 20
Trump-backed candidate for Arizona's
governor, Kari Lake, is urging voters in the
state to quickly fill in and send through
the mail-in ballots, an unexpected appeal
from a politician who has tried to outlaw
early voting, including mail-in ballots.
"Arizona, If you have a Mail-In Ballot, fill
it out and Mail it in ASAP," Lake wrote on
Twitter on Tuesday. "I've talked to True

is the safest way to be sure your Mail-In vote
is counted--Not the drop boxes. FILL
IT OUT & MAIL IT OUT NOW. Let's win this!"

Table 18: States With All-Mail Elections
In all-mail elections, all registered voters
are sent a ballot in the mail. The voter
marks the ballot, puts it in a secrecy
envelope or sleeve and then into a separate
mailing envelope, signs an affidavit on the
exterior of the mailing envelope and returns
the package via mail or by dropping it off.
Ballots are mailed out well ahead of Election
Day, and thus voters have an “election period,”
not just a single day, to vote. All-mail
elections can be thought of as absentee voting
for everyone. This system is also referred to
as “vote by mail.”
* Eight states—California, Colorado, Hawaii,
Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington—allow
all elections to be conducted by mail.
* Two states—Nebraska and North Dakota—permit
counties to opt into conducting elections by mail.
*Nine states—Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Kansas,
Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico and
Wyoming—allow specific small elections to
be conducted by mail.
* Four states—Idaho, Minnesota, New Jersey and
New Mexico - permit all-mail elections for certain
small jurisdictions.
