The Corinth School District Board voted on Monday to terminate
superintendent Edward Lee Childress for his perceived mishandling of an incident involving a former teacher arrested on federal child pornography charges.
A public statement from the school district said trustees voted
unanimously to end Childress' employment. The statement did not specify
when Childress started leading the school district.
"The District’s greatest priority is the safety and well-being of its
students. The Board of Trustees is heartbroken over the pain caused to
these young victims and their families over the incident with a former
teacher at Corinth Middle School," the statement reads.
Federal authorities arrested and charged former teacher Wilson Frederick
Jones, 30, with producing and possessing a morphed image of child
pornography. According to a criminal complaint, Jones created videos that "depicted known Corinth students engaging in inappropriate behavior,
including kissing and exposing themselves."
Court documents state Childress learned of the alleged crimes in November
2024. Jones was not fired. Instead, Jones resigned on Nov. 21, 2024.
An FBI affidavit states the Mississippi Department of Education was not notified until Jan. 29. Police were not notified until late February,
which is when the investigation began and led to the arrest of Jones on
March 12.
WTVA reported the day following Jones' arrest that parents packed into a
board room at the Corinth school board's regular meeting and demanded that trustees fire Childress for not reporting Jones as required by law. WTVA reported Attorney Tony Farese represents the families of seven of the
eight students whose images were allegedly used in the AI-generated pornography.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported Farese said Childress
could face the federal charge of misprision of a felony, or knowing a
felony was committed and not reporting it to authorities. The crime
carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.
The school board's four–paragraph statement states that counseling
services would be provided for the victims and their families. The
trustees said they are working "to quickly implement new policies designed
to prevent a similar incident from ever happening again."
