I'm using ES and while it had managed to filter out most of the spam,
it seems to be back with a vengeance today, unfiltered.

E-S got through ~80 spam messagges in 24 hours.
On Google Groups you can see 80 spam messages in 1.5 hours.
So E-S filter is not perfect, but it gets rid of 95% of the spam.

It looks obvious now that the spam is not just targeting random places,

    That's why I concluded its not a spammer, it's a DOS attack.
They hit c.l.c and c.l.fortran but not c.l.ada.

Do you really think that "political" attacks would target Usenet?
While it is annoying to us users, probably almost no one in our
respective governments even knows about Usenet or cares, as to us users,
we're probably less than 0.1% of the population. So I have a hard time believing any of this could be political.

A DOS attack on technical Usenet groups is utterly pointless. So it is
    not a realistic explanation.

The spam posts are all adverts with links to websites for betting,
drugs, and other illegal or at least questionable but high profit
    activities. They are advertising.

Of course, they are also useless as advertising, since they are all
being sent repeatedly to the same people, who are certainly not their
    usual target audience.

So the explanation I see, is that someone - an advertising firm or
broker used by these sites - has been paying an individual or external
company with a contract "we will you pay x dollars if you send y
messages that will reach z readers". And that person has reckoned that
there are hundreds of people reading these groups, so if they send
thousands of messages a day to these groups, that counts as millions of
hits - and that is worth a few bob for very little effort. Unless they
are complete morons they will realise that this is all useless to the
original customer (the betting sites), but if they get paid, why should
    they care?

Because they ARE technical newsgroups. Do you seriously think they
