• NYS puts price caps on Internet service. AT&T packs up and leaves

New York's Affordable Broadband Act is officially in effect, but not without some hiccups and the loss of a major internet service provider. The Affordable Broadband Act (ABA), which was initially enacted in 2021, blocked before it could go into effect, and is now officially in effect as of Jan. 15, requires internet service providers to offer broadband internet to qualifying households at reduced prices.
    .....
Internet service providers are already pulling out of New York state as AT&T has stopped offering its fixed-wireless internet service statewide as of Jan. 15, according to the company. And since New York is outside of AT&T's wireline service footprint, there are no other home internet options available throughout the state.

"While we are committed to providing reliable and affordable internet service to customers across the country, New York's broadband law imposes harmful rate regulations that make it uneconomical for AT&T to invest in and expand our broadband infrastructure in the state," an AT&T spokesperson said in a written statement last week.

    According to danny burstein <dannyb@panix.com>:

And since New York is outside of AT&T's wireline >service footprint, there are no other home internet options available >throughout the state.

That is an impressively bad piece of reporting. It's true AT&T has no wireline service in NYS, because New York Telephone became part of Verizon. VZ has very aggressive fixed wireless geals, per this article:

    https://www.fierce-network.com/wireless/verizon-doubles-down-fwa-q3-call

Verizon and T-Mobile offer fixed wireless most places, starting at $35/mo:

    https://www.verizon.com/home/internet/lte/ https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/plans

More to the point, in most of NYS there is cable internet and often
something from the local telephone company such as VZ FIOS and the
1GB fiber my RLEC provides which is much faster than fixed wireless.
Fixed wireless only makes sense in places that don't have wired
    Internet.
