Licklider and Taylor’s vision in “The Computer as a Communication Device” imagined
computers connecting people for collaboration and conversation, and Usenet does capture a
lot of that. It allows users to share knowledge, join discussions, and interact in a
decentralized space—basically, early social media where everyone can contribute.
But some things turned out differently. Usenet is more technical and harder to use than
platforms like Facebook or Twitter, which have made communication way easier for the
average person. Licklider and Taylor didn’t predict that most online conversations would shift
to these big, centralized platforms that control much of the internet now.
They also didn’t foresee some of the negatives that come with open networks like
Usenet—such as spam, trolling, and misinformation. Usenet has no moderation, so it can be
chaotic at times, and managing abusive behavior is harder. While they dreamed of a
collaborative, knowledge-sharing world, the reality of the internet has shown that not all
communication ends up being positive or productive.
