  • gimp and G'Mic

    Hi,
    as gimp was updated from 8 to 16 bit per channel recently (with v2.9):

    Is G'mic also working in 16 bit mode in the actual gimp versions
    (2.10.6) ?

    Hi,
    thanks, I did not mean the OS bits (16/32) but the colour resolution.

    But in the meantime I've done some tests and I'm sure, G'mic
    is running in 16 bit per channel resolution in Gimp 2.10.

    I check in to this group every so often, and was puzzled by your
    reference to "G'Mic", as I had never heard of it.

    A check of the web quickly led to me to find it and decide that
    I *had* to grab it!

    I now have both the command-line and GIMP (2.8) versions on my
    Linux box, and am somewhat startled by its capabilities! The web
    doesn't seem to have many references except from the authors
    themselves. Rather surprising.

    Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. I expect it to be very useful!

    I've done a few experiments with G'Mic on GIMP 2.10.6. It seems that
    G'Mic can work in 16-bit precision.

    Here's what I did.

    1. Start with an 8-bit-per-channel test image. Check the distribution of
    pixel values using Colors->Curves... (My test image has smooth and
    continuous distributions in all three of the RGB channels.)

    2. Convert the image to a 16-bit image, using Image->Precision->16-bit
    integer. Check the distribution of pixel values again. Resize the
    "Adjust Color Curves" dialog to make it larger. You can now see gaps in
    the distribution of pixel values. (In each color channel, the 256
    possible original pixel values won't populate the 0-65535 range evenly.)

    3. Apply a filter in G'Mic.

    4. Check the distribution of pixel values again. The distributions are
    now smooth and continuous, again.

    If the G'Mic filter in step 3 can only do 8-bit arithmetic, you'd expect
    to see gaps in the resulting distributions of pixel values (but you don't).
