You can use the paths tool (the nib pen icon in the toolbox or
Tools->paths in the menu bar).
1. Select the paths tool.
2. In the Tool Options panel, make sure that the edit mode is "Design".
3. You can define a poly-line using a series of left-clicks on the
canvas. A straight line is just a poly-line with 1 segment.
4. After you have defined the line, click "Stroke Path" in the Tool
Options panel.
5. A dialog will show up to allow you to choose the style options for
the line.
6. When done, click "Stroke" in the dialog.
Where do I find that nib pen? Here is a screen shot of what
gimp shows me:
