    Frankly, I’m quite happy to see it relegated to a museum. There are
    much better alternatives for anything you might imagine BASIC could do nowadays.

    E.g. string handling--it was OK for the pre-Perl days, nowadays you
    expect a decent regular-expression capability as a matter of course.

    MS (and others?) butchered BASIC[0] to fit into 8-bitters. The result
    was that nearly everyone started to call a TinyBASIC just BASIC because
    they did not know the original.

    That was BASIC's main problem.
