• smtp headache

From Daniel@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jun 17 09:02:15 2024
Attempting to complete configuration of alpine on ubuntu.

I continue to get the following error while sending:

Sender address rejected: not owned by user <email address>

In the initial area of the error, it shows that my linux username is concatenated with the imap address

    mail not sent: <username@imapaddress>

nowhere is this listed in my configuration.

When I attempt to send the message, it prompts me for a password of the
proper smtp server. Not sure why it is including my linux username
since, I authenticate with my email address as username when I launch
    alpine.

    It's so strange

I use email from my domain registrar, namecheap.

    User Doman: mail.privateemail.com
    SMTP Server: smtp.privateemail.com:465/user=myemailaddr/ssl/novalidate-cert

    Any hints greatly appreciated.

    Daniel

    Hello Daniel,

Another thing you could try is to go to the Main menu and press "J" for
the journal (log). Maybe you can see something in there to give you (and
    us) a hint.

    Best regards,
    Daniel

You are probably not setting up your From: field correctly. Here is a
guide on how to do it.

I'm glad Nancy McGough is still keeping her Web site up from so long
ago. She had very clear instructions for those new to Pine on how to
perform various tasks and to access features.

Wow! Great resource! And here I spent time piecing together various bits
and pieces from different blogs. ;)

I already had that configured. Eduardo's URL supplied the correct
    response.

That did it! What the hell!

Nothing was obvious about that and I'm grateful the lady keeps that page
up even after twenty years. But I'm also grateful yall were here to
    assist. Thank you.

I was using alpine solely to browse my emails. Then i had to launch xfce
just to open thunderbird. Now I don't have to.

It does need an update because the roles options have changed, but it
    was still doable.

I just wish it didn't take long to 'write fcc into sent' but I'll take
    it.

I found the solution above, from Eduardo. The journal provided the exact
error I got on the ui.

my problem is solved now, however.

I'm glad that site's up, and if she ever takes it down, it'll at least
    be on the internet archive.

    Happy to hear it! =)

And if reading "live" from the imap server is slow, you can also use the Maildir patch together with mbsync to sync emails to local folders and use alpine against those. That will yield a massive increase in speed (if you
need a speed increase that is).

    Best regards,
    Daniel
