Always has been. Just look at the news he chooses to post here compared
with the news he never posts here and you'll see the trend. ; )
Most of us want something bigger than a tablet for working on, and
something more portable for carrying around in our pockets.
Caught in between, the tablet is regarded by most customers as a
lightweight content delivery machine you grab to watch Netflix, surf the
web, or play a few games.

I like it for the screen real estate of course. I read books and pdfs on it and it's less constraining than the phone. Pdfs are almost impossible on
the phone. Video is better too. I have streamed F1 with both live racetrack and several driver cockpit views going at the same time with ipad, phones, and tv. That's an experience!
The problam is, as said above, the iPad is really only any use as a
"content delivery" device and simple tasks. Trying to do any real work
on it is just a massive exercise in frustration, so an iPad / tablet
will never be a good replacemeant for a proper computer.

There are rumours of Apple working on two new iPad products:
- a 16" iPad to supposedly be released in 2023
<https://www.macrumors.com/2022/10/26/16-inch-ipad-next-year-report/>
and
- a foldable iPad (usable as a "small" screen and open
out to double the size) in 2024
<https://www.macrumors.com/2022/10/18/foldable-ipad-2024-analyst/>

Yes, quite.
What about if you could add a keyboard and touchpad?

A touchscreen interface simply isn't accurate enough or good enough for
real work to be done. Just trying to select or insert some text can be massively frustrating (you often have to resort to the time consuming
fiddly workaround of holding the on-screen space bar to move the text
cursor.
Even if you plug in a mouse or trackpad, all you get is a big circle "pseudo-fat-finger" as the mouse pointer to indicate where you are. The Pencil / stylus is more accurate, but you're still obscuring the screen
with your hand while using it.

Just tried that on mine. Apple could have done a much better job integrating the keyboard & touchpad they sold me!

I have an ipad (latest ipad mini) and I can confirm it's not terribly accurate.
Especially near the edges of the screen it's quite hit&miss.

It's true, just look at a youtube video and you will see a circle as a mousepointer.
That's pretty lame that apple didn't even bother to implement the option to have an
arrow as a mouse pointer, as you would typically expect when using a mouse.

arrow as a mouse pointer, as you would typically expect when using a mouse.
reasons.
an arrow is completely wrong for what is essentially a touch-based
device, and arguably, having a pointing device at all is inappropriate.
ipad os is *not* mac os or windows and trying to make it like those or otherwise combining the two is guaranteed to fail. just ask microsoft
how well that worked out with win8.

not only that, if that's all you do, then you don't need a keyboard,

the only limitation is the user.
