In terms of security updates - an iOS update is the *rarest of them all*
While every common consumer OS _except_ iOS often updates older systems,
an iOS update of older systems is literally the rarest of them all.
Is there any common consumer OS with a _worse_ track record than iOS?
FACT:
*If you have an iPhone 5S or 6, it's time for a _rare_ iOS update*

"Apple obviously doesn¢t release security updates for its older software
that often, so when it does, you know it¢s a reasonably serious issue."
As with almost all such huge open holes in iOS, Apple didn't find it, as someone else had to tell Apple about its own long-standing holes.
Apple doesn't even have QA - or they would have found this years ago.
But they didn't.
And they never do.
Worse, as usual with Apple's huge holes in iOS, Apple _still_ is unaware
that the exploit is widely used around the world (Apple has never cared).
In fact, Apple effectively says, yeah, "maybe" it was exploited... which is proof positive that Apple has no clue how these exploits are being used.
"What's more, Apple says it's possible someone out in the world has tried
to use this exploit."
Note: Every time Apple says "maybe" it means "holy shit" [just like when
Russia says "maybe" it means the same thing (it's their propaganda).]
Is there any common consumer OS with a _worse_ track record than iOS?
